OVERALL, THIS PROJECT ATTEMPTS TO ADDRESS THE MODERNIZATION OF THE NCSU PEANUT BREEDING AND GENETICS PROGRAM. IN ORDER TO ADVANCE THE SELECTION OF LEAF SPOT RESISTANT LINES MORE ACCURATELY AND EFFICIENTLY, GENOMIC MARKERS, DEVELOPED THROUGH REDUCED REPRESENTATION SEQUENCING ON PARENTAL AND ADVANCED MATERIALS IN THE CULTIVAR DEVELOPMENT PIPELINE, CAN ENHANCE THE ABILITY TO CONSISTENTLY SELECT ON SPECIFIC, BENEFICIAL REGIONS (INTROGRESSED OR OTHERWISE). THESE REGIONS HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED THROUGH GWAS USING THE GENOMIC INFORMATION PAIRED WITH AN ACCURATE DIFFERENTIATION OF LEAF SPOT DISEASES (ELS VS LLS) AND QUANTIFICATION OF DISEASE PRESSURE. THE END GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO POSITION THE NCSU PEANUT BREEDING AND GENETICS PROGRAM ON A PATH TOWARDS GENOMIC SELECTION FOLLOWING THE CONCLUSION OF THE WORK. THESE EFFORTS WILL BE CARRIED FORWARD THROUGH THE CONTINUAL GENOTYPING OF ADVANCED BREEDING LINES (AND EVENTUALLY LATE GENERATION BREEDING FAMILIES), HIGH-THROUGHPUT PHENOTYPING TECHNIQUES THAT PROVIDE INSIGHT FOR SELECTION OF LEAF SPOT AND VC-REGION DISEASE RESISTANCE, AND PROMOTING THE USE OF THIS PHENOTYPING PLATFORM ACROSS LOCAL, REGIONAL, NATIONAL, AND INTERNATIONAL TESTING NETWORKS. FINALLY, WE EXPECT THAT ADDITIONAL AGRONOMICALLY ESSENTIAL TRAITS CAN BE CAPTURED USING THIS PHENOTYPING PLATFORM. SUCH TRAITS CAN BE USED TO DEVELOP MARKERS FOR EARLY GENERATION SELECTION OR IMPROVE GENOMIC SELECTION ACCURACY WHEN USED AS CO-VARIATES.
