IN AN ERA DEFINED BY A RAPIDLY GROWING GLOBAL POPULATION AND CIRCUMSTANCES THAT RENDER WATER AMONG THE PRIMARY FACTORS LIMITING AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO INVEST IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH YIELDING CROPS THAT CAN MOST EFFICIENTLY UTILIZE LIMITED WATER RESOURCES. HERE WE PROPOSE TO PERFORM THE FINAL GRAIN AND FORAGE YIELD TESTING NEEDED TO COMMERCIALIZE ADVANCED SPRING AND WINTER TRITICALE LINES ADAPTED TO CENTRAL CALIFORNIA, THE KLAMATH BASIN AND WASHINGTON STATE. THESE LINES HAVE DEMONSTRATED SUPERIOR GRAIN YIELD IN MULTIPLE ENVIRONMENTS AND ARE THE DIRECT RESULT OF A NIFA INVESTMENT IN JOSHUA HEGARTY'S POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP, AWARD 2017-07092. THE RESULTING CULTIVARS WILL PRESENT VALUABLE OPTIONS TO GROWERS IN THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA, WHICH ALREADY PRODUCES NEARLY 300,000 ACRES OF TRITICALE FORAGE AND FOR GROWERS IN THE KLAMATH BASIN AND WASHINGTON STATE, WHO PRODUCE OVER 500,000 ACRES OF NON-ALFALFA FORAGE. BEYOND THESE CULTIVARS, THIS PROPOSAL WILL SUPPORT A GROWING AND HIGHLY COLLABORATIVE TRITICALE BREEDING INITIATIVE BETWEEN MULTIPLE PUBLIC WHEAT BREEDING PROGRAMS.
