HARD RED SPRING (HRS) WHEAT IS A SPECIAL CLASS OF WHEAT AND IS GENERALLY USED FOR THE FINEST BAKED BREAD, HARD ROLL, BAGEL, AND PIZZA CRUST THANKS TO ITS HIGH PROTEIN CONTENT AND GLUTEN STRENGTH. GRAIN YIELD IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TARGET IN HRS WHEAT BREEDING PROGRAMS. HOWEVER, GRAIN YIELD IMPROVEMENT IS HAMPERED BY LONG BREEDING CYCLE AND LOW SELECTION INTENSITY OF PHENOTYPIC SELECTION. WHEN END-USE QUALITY HAS TO BE ENSURED, IMPROVEMENT OF GRAIN YIELD IS ALSO RESTRAINED BY ITS NEGATIVE CORRELATION WITH SOME END-USE QUALITY RELATED TRAITS LIKE PROTEIN CONTENT. RECURRENT INDEX SELECTION IS A WAY TO IMPROVE MULTIPLE TRAITS SIMULTANEOUSLY AND MORE RAPIDLY. GENOMIC SELECTION (GS) PARTICULARLY PROMISES THE ENHANCEMENT OF GENETIC GAIN FOR COMPLEX TRAITS BY INCREASING SELECTION INTENSITY AND/OR SHORTENING BREEDING CYCLE. HOWEVER, FEW EXPERIMENTAL STUDIESHAVE BEEN CONDUCTED ON USING GS INDEX IN RECURRENT SELECTION FOR MULTIPLE TRAITS, NAMELY RECURRENT GENOMICS-INDEX SELECTION. IN THIS PROJECT, WE WILL CONDUCT MALE-STERILE FACILITATED RECURRENT INDEX SELECTION, AND TEST IF IT CAN IMPROVE GRAIN YIELD WHILE MAINTAINING PROTEIN CONTENT. THEN, WE WILL DEVELOP GENOMIC PREDICTION MODELS FOR THE INDICES OF GRAIN YIELD AND PROTEIN CONTENT, AND TEST IF RECURRENT GENOMICS-INDEX SELECTION CAN FURTHER ACCELERATE GENETIC GAIN. ACHIEVEMENT OF THESE OBJECTIVES WILL SERVE AS A PIONEER FOR USING GENOMICS-INDEX OF MULTIPLE TRAITS IN RECURRENT SELECTION, AND PROVIDE BREEDERS A COMPLEMENTARY APPROACH TO IMPROVE GRAIN YIELD IN WHEAT.
