OVERRELIANCE OF AQUACULTURE FEEDS ON FISHMEAL AND FISH OIL IS INCREASINGLY UNSUSTAINABLE FINANCIALLY, SOCIALLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY AND WILL NEGATIVELY IMPACT FUTURE AQUACULTURE GROWTH AND FOOD SUPPLY. WE WILL DEVELOP A PROTEIN MEAL BY PROCESSING UNDER-UTILIZED MICROALGAL CO-PRODUCT (LEFT-OVER BIOMASS AFTER EXTRACTION OF OILS, MARKETED AS A HUMAN SUPPLEMENT). WE WILL DEVELOP NEW AQUAFEED FORMULAE COMBINING THE NEW CO-PRODUCT MEAL AND ANOTHER OIL-RICH MICROALGA TO REPLACE FISHMEAL AND FISH OIL IN AQUAFEEDS FOR RAINBOW TROUT. WE WILL: PROCESS CO-PRODUCT AND MANUFACTURE NEW PROTEIN MEALS; COMPARE THE LEVEL OF NUTRIENTS AND ANTI-NUTRIENTS, NUTRIENT DIGESTIBILITY, RETENTION AND WASTE OUTPUTS OF CO-PRODUCT MEALS; QUANTIFY EFFECTS OF REPLACING FISHMEAL WITH CO-PRODUCTMEAL ON FISH GROWTH; INVESTIGATE COMBINING NEW CO-PRODUCTMEAL WITH ANOTHER MICROALGA AND CANOLA OIL TO PRODUCE TROUT FLESH THAT IS BENEFICIAL FOR HUMAN HEALTH WHEN REPLACING FISHMEAL AND FISH OIL; QUANTIFY FINANCIAL VIABILITY OF INCORPORATING PROCESSED CO-PRODUCT TROUT DIETS. THIS PROJECT DEVELOPS NEW AQUAFEEDS THAT WILL STRENGTHEN ECONOMIC, ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY OF AQUACULTURE BY REPLACING FISHMEAL AND FISH OIL WITH AFFORDABLE AND COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE MICROALGAE AND CO-PRODUCTS.
