THIS GRANT PROVIDES PARTIAL SUPPORT FOR THE 3RD LARGE ANIMAL GENETIC ENGINEERING SUMMIT, TO BE HELD IN PARK CITY, UTAH (2021). THE TOPICS COVERED IN THIS CONFERENCE ADDRESS THE TOOLS AND RESOURCES - ANIMAL BREEDING AND FUNCTIONAL ANNOTATION OF GENOMES PRIORITY AREA (A1201). THE UN FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION (FAO) PROJECTS THAT THERE WILL BE A 73% INCREASE IN MEAT DEMAND BY 2050; THIS NEED IS UNLIKELY TO BE FULFILLED BY INCREASING ANIMAL NUMBERS. ANNUAL IMPROVEMENTS OF 2-3% BY GENETIC SELECTION AND MANAGEMENT WILL NOT BE SUFFICIENT TO MEET THE GROWING DEMAND. THUS, INNOVATIVE NEW TECHNOLOGIES WILL BE ESSENTIAL. THE REMARKABLE DEVELOPMENT OF GENOME EDITING IN THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS HAS REVOLUTIONIZE THE FIELD DUE TO THE PROSPECT THAT FOR THE FIRST-TIME LARGE ANIMAL GENOMES CAN BE MODIFIED WITH PRECISION AND EFFICIENCY PREVIOUSLY ONLY ACHIEVABLE IN THE MOUSE SYSTEM. THIS TECHNOLOGY ALLOWS FOR IMPROVEMENTS IN LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION TRAITS, IMPROVING ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE, AND GENERATION OF MORE REFINED LARGE ANIMAL MODELS FOR HUMAN DISEASES. THE PRIMARY GOALS OF THE MEETING ARE: (1) TO BRING TOGETHER SCIENTISTS WORKING IN THE FIELD OF LIVESTOCK GENETIC ENGINEERING (GE) TO HAVE A FOCUSED FORUM THAT ALLOWS FOR INTERACTION BETWEEN TRAINEES AND ESTABLISHED RESEARCH LEADERS FROM ACADEMIA, INDUSTRY AND GOVERNMENT RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS; (2) TO SHARE TECHNICAL INFORMATION THAT COULD FACILITATE FURTHER TECHNOLOGY IMPROVEMENTS IN THE FIELD OF LIVESTOCK GE INCLUDING GENOME EDITING AND THEIR APPLICATION IN AGRICULTURE AND BIOMEDICINE; AND (3) TO REVIEW THE CURRENT REGULATORY ENVIRONMENT AND RISK ASSESSMENT PROCESS.
