**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** UNITED STATES HAS THE LARGEST BROILER INDUSTRY PRODUCING OVER 9 BILLION BIRDS ANNUALLY FOR DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION AND EXPORT. FOOD SAFETY IS A MAJOR PRIORITY FOR THE POULTRY INDUSTRY TO ENSURE A SAFE AND NUTRITIOUS PRODUCT FOR CONSUMERS. SALMONELLA AND CAMPYLOBACTER JEJUNI ARE THE LEADING POULTRY ASSOCIATED BACTERIA THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OVER 2 MILLION ANNUAL ILLNESSES IN THE UNITED STATES. THESE PATHOGENS COLONIZE THE POULTRY GUT IN HIGH NUMBERS THEREBY LEADING TO CONTAMINATION OF THE CARCASS DURING SLAUGHTER. CURRENTLY EMPLOYED BIOSECURITY MEASURES, VACCINATIONS, AND OTHER INTERVENTIONS AT THE FARM LEVEL ARE NOT COMPLETED EFFECTIVE IN REDUCING SALMONELLA AND CAMPYLOBACTER JEJUNI COLONIZATION IN CHICKENS. THEREFORE, IT IS CRITICAL TO DEVELOP NOVEL STRATEGIES TO CONTROL THEIR COLONIZATION IN CHICKENS, THEREBY REDUCING THE RISK OF PRODUCT CONTAMINATION AND SUBSEQUENT HUMAN INFECTIONS. THIS IS ESPECIALLY SIGNIFICANT WITH THE FOOD SAFETY MODERNIZATION ACT AND THE INDUSTRY'S IMPETUS TO ADOPT A MORE PREVENTIVE FOOD SAFETY STRATEGY AND USDA-FSIS REVISED PERFORMANCE STANDARDS FOR BOTH SALMONELLA AND CAMPYLOBACTER ON POULTRY PRODUCTS. THIS PROPOSAL AIMS TO DEVELOP PLANT-BASED DRINKING WATER SUPPLEMENTS FOR CONTROLLING SALMONELLA AND CAMPYLOBACTER JEJUNI COLONIZATION IN THE GUT OF BROILER CHICKENS. OUR APPROACH COMBINES THE ANTIMICROBIAL EFFICACY OF PLANT DERIVED ANTIMICROBIALS WITH NOVEL CARRIER SYSTEMS TO DEVELOP STABLE PLANT-BASED EMULSIONS THAT CAN BE ADMINISTERED IN POULTRY DRINKING WATER FOR KILLING THE AFOREMENTIONED PATHOGENS IN THE GUT.?
