**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** ELEVATED LEVELS OF EMERGING CONTAMINANTS NAMED PER- AND POLYFLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES (PFAS) HAVE BEEN OBSERVED IN MANY SOURCE WATERS. USING CONTAMINATED SOURCE WATERS FOR AGRICULTURAL IRRIGATION COULD TRANSFER THESE POLLUTANTS TO CROP AND FOOD PRODUCTS. IT IS A CONCERN WHEN RECYCLED OR TREATED MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER IS USED AS AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE IN HIGHLY POPULATED AND / OR SEMI-ARID REGIONS, BECAUSE OF THE INTRODUCTION OF PFAS TO AGRICULTURAL ECOSYSTEMS. TO UNDERSTAND HOW ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND FARMING PRACTICES AFFECT THE DISTRIBUTIONS AND TRANSPORT OF PFAS IN AGROECOSYSTEMS AND TO IDENTIFY THE BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICE TO REDUCE THEIR RISK IN FOOD CROP PRODUCTIONS, WE PROPOSE A FOUR-YEAR STUDY WITH THREE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: (1) OCCURRENCE AND DISTRIBUTION OF PFAS IN AGRICULTURAL ECOSYSTEMS; (2) IRRIGATION STRATEGIES TO REDUCE THE TRANSPORT OF PFAS TO FOOD CROPS; (3) SOIL AMENDMENT TO REDUCE THE BIOAVAILABILITY OF PFAS IN AGRICULTURAL SOILS. THROUGH COLLABORATION WITH USDA-ARS, WEWILL CONDUCT A PFAS SURVEY IN AGRICULTURAL ECOSYSTEMS THAT HAVE BEEN IRRIGATED WITH RECYCLED MUNICIPAL WASTEWATERS FOR A LONG TERM. CONTROLLED GREENHOUSE STUDIES WILL BE CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE DISTRIBUTION OF PFAS UNDER THE BIOLOGICAL AND ABIOTIC CONTROLLING FACTORS. GREENHOUSE EXPERIMENTS WILL BE USED TO EXAMINE THE EFFECTS OF IRRIGATION METHODS ON THE TRANSPORT OF PFAS AND FACTORS OF PLANT SPECIES AND EARTHWORMS WILL BE CONSIDERED TOGETHER. WE WILL DETERMINE THE CAPABILITY OF ORGANIC AMENDMENTS IN ADSORBING PFAS, BY CONSIDERING OTHER CHEMICALS COMMONLY EXISTING IN TREATED WASTEWATER. THE FIELD EXPERIMENT WILL BE CONDUCTED WITH USDA-ARS TO COMBINE SUB-SURFACE IRRIGATION WITH SOIL AMENDMENT FOR RISK REDUCTION.
