** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** SORGHUM IS A DROUGHT- AND HEAT-RESISTANT AND LOW-INPUT CEREAL GRAIN GROWN THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, AND IS BEING WIDELY USED FOR BIOFUEL PRODUCTION IN THE U.S. SORGHUM AND ITS DISTILLERS' GRAIN PROTEINS HAVE RELATIVELY POOR NUTRITIONAL QUALITY AND ARE LESS ATTRACTIVE AS LIVESTOCK FEED. THERE IS A CRITICAL NEED TO EXPLORE THEIR NEW AND VALUE-ADDED USES. RECENTLY, WE FOUND THAT SORGHUM PROTEIN HYDROLYSATES POSSESSED GOOD ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES, WHICH COULD BE VERY PROMISING NATURAL ANTIOXIDANT OPTIONS. THESE ANTIOXIDANTS ARE CAPABLE OF INHIBITING OIL/FAT OXIDATION, ALONG WITH THEIR INTRINSIC NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS. THIS RESEARCH WILL DEVELOP ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES TO CONVERT GRAIN SORGHUM AND ITS DISTILLERS' GRAIN PROTEINS TO NOVEL NATURALLY DERIVED ANTIOXIDANTS VIA OPTIMIZED ENZYMATIC AND FRACTIONATION PROCESSES AND ESTABLISH INTEGRATED EFFICIENT PROCESSES AND TECHNO-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS MODELING TO PRODUCE BOTH ANTIOXIDANTS AND FUEL ETHANOL FROM SORGHUMS. THE INTEGRATED CONVERSION OF GRAIN STARCH TO ETHANOL AND PROTEIN TO ANTIOXIDANTS WILL INCREASE PRODUCER RETURN AND LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY AND ULTIMATELY ENHANCE THE ECONOMIC VIABILITY OF BIOFUEL PRODUCTIONS. THE DEVELOPMENT OF HEALTHY NATURAL ANTIOXIDANTS FROM CEREAL GRAIN AND BYPRODUCT PROTEINS WILL NOT ONLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE SUSTAINABILITY AND GROWTH IN MEETING BURGEONING WORLD DEMAND FOR NATURAL FOOD/FEED/BEVERAGE INGREDIENTS, BUT ALSO PROVIDE NEW REVENUE STREAMS FOR TRADITIONAL AGRICULTURE. THE KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNOLOGY BASED ON SORGHUMS WILL ALSO BENEFIT THE ADVANCED UTILIZATION OF OTHER CEREAL GRAINS.
