**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** DAIRY INDUSTRY IS A VERY IMPORTANT AGRICULTURAL SECTOR IN THE U.S. WHILE PROVIDING QUALITY FOOD FOR OUR SOCIETY, DAIRY INDUSTRY PRODUCES TREMENDOUS QUANTITIES OF SOLID MANURE. ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS CALL FOR ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGIES THAT HANDLE DAIRY MANURE MORE EFFICIENTLY AND ARE PROFITABLE FOR FARMERS. MEANWHILE, ORGANIC FARMING IS A NATIONAL STRATEGIC GOAL TO PROVIDE OUR SOCIETY WITH HIGH QUALITY AND HEALTHY FOOD, WHICH CALLS FOR ORGANIC FERTILIZERS. WE ALSO NEED TO WISELY UTILIZE OUR LIMITED RESOURCES, INCLUDING DAIRY MANURE. THIS PROPOSED WORK ADDRESSES ALL THREE ASPECTS ABOVE.THE SPECIFIC GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INCORPORATE THE FINDINGS FROM OUR PREVIOUS RESEARCH INTO AN ENGINEERING EFFORT TO DESIGN, FABRICATE, AND EVALUATE A CONTINUOUS-FLOW PROTOTYPE SYSTEM FOR PRODUCING HYDROCHAR FROM DAIRY MANURE, A PHOSPHORUS-RICH FERTILIZER. WE WILL OPTIMIZE PROCESS PARAMETERS FOR DEVELOPING THE PROTOTYPE SYSTEM, CONDUCT A DETAILED PROCESS DESIGN AND CONTROL MECHANISM, FABRICATE THE PROTOTYPE HYDROCHAR PROCESSOR, TEST ITS OPERABILITY ON A COMMERCIAL DAIRY FARM. WE WILL PERFORM A TECHNO-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS ON THE SYSTEM AND DEVELOP A CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR FUTURE PRE-COMMERCIALIZATION.THE EXPECTED OUTPUT IS A CONTINUOUS-FLOW PROTOTYPE SYSTEM FOR HYDROCHAR PRODUCTION FROM DAIRY MANURE AT TRL-4. THIS PROJECT WILL PAVE THE WAY FOR NEXT-PHASE GOAL OF PRODUCING HYDROCHAR IN A BULK QUANTITY FOR FIELD TRIALS AS A PHOSPHORUS-RICH FERTILIZER FOR ORGANIC FARMING.THE EXPECTED IMPACT IS THE ADVANCEMENT OF AN ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR DAIRY MANURE MANAGEMENT AND PHOSPHORUS CYCLING, LEADING TO MORE PROFITABLE AND SUSTAINABLE DAIRY INDUSTRY AND ORGANIC FOOD PRODUCTION, AND BETTER ENVIRONMENT.
