**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** FOR THE PAST HALF-CENTURY, AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION ACTIVITIES--SOIL PREPARATION, PLANTING, CULTIVATING, HARVESTING, PACKING, AND MANAGEMENT--HAVE INCREASINGLY BEEN UNDERTAKEN BY NON-FARM BUSINESS. THE INDUSTRIAL TAXONOMY THAT DIVIDES THE ECONOMY INTO FARM AND NON-FARM BUSINESSES NO LONGER ALIGNS WELL WITH THE DIVIDE BETWEEN AGRICULTURAL AND NON-AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION. THE VERTICAL DISINTEGRATION OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR REPORTING ON THE FARM ECONOMY HAS LONG BEEN ACKNOWLEDGEDTHE POTENTIAL RAMIFICATIONS OF THIS INFORMATION DEFICIT ARE FAR-REACHING; SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CONTEMPORARY PUBLIC POLICY DEBATES ARE DIRECTLY LINKED TO AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION, INCLUDING THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES OF MODERN FOOD PRODUCTION SYSTEMS, IMMIGRATION, GLOBAL TRADE, AND RURAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. BUT, THE VERTICAL DIS-INTEGRATION OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION MEANS THE EFFECTS OF POLICY EXTEND BEYOND THE FARM. RESEARCHERS THUS LACK THE DATA TO MEASURE THE FULL ECONOMICCONTRIBUTION OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION OR THE POTENTIAL EFFECTS OF POLICY ON AGRICULTURAL BUSINESSES AND LOCAL ECONOMIES.NEVERTHELESS, WE HAVE DEMONSTRATED THROUGH PREVIOUS USDA-SUPPORTED RESEARCH EFFORTS THAT REPORTING ON OFF-FARM FOOD-AND-AGRICULTURE INDUSTRIES IS FEASIBLE USING EXISTING DATA COLLECTED BY THE CENSUS BUREAU AND INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE (IRS) AND MADE AVAILABLE TO APPROVED RESEARCHERS THROUGH FEDERAL STATISTICAL RESEARCH DATA CENTERS (FSRDC). IN THIS PROJECT, WE PROPOSE TO USE THESE DATA TO PROVIDE VALUABLE NEW ESTIMATES OF THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE AGRICULTURAL SUPPORT SERVICES SECTOR BY EXAMINING HOW: 1) ESTABLISHMENT AND INDUSTRY DYNAMICS OF AGRICULTURAL SUPPORT SERVICES ARE RELATED TO ESTABLISHMENT CHARACTERISTICS AND LOCAL MARKET STRUCTURE; 2) THE ATTRIBUTES OF FARMS INFLUENCE THE INDUSTRY AND ESTABLISHMENT DYNAMICS OF AGRICULTURAL SUPPORT SERVICES; AND 3) THE ATTRIBUTES OF ESTABLISHMENTS ENGAGED IN AGRICULTURAL SUPPORT SERVICES INFLUENCE FARM PRODUCTIVITY AND INPUT DEMAND.
