**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** WITH INCREASING GRAIN PRODUCTION AND VOLUME OF GRAINS HANDLED ACROSS THE U.S., THERE EXISTS AN INCREASED GRAIN DUST EXPLOSION HAZARD. IN THE LAST TEN YEARS, THERE WERE 85 REPORTED GRAIN DUST EXPLOSIONS CAUSING 17 DEATHS. BUT, THERE IS A LACK OF ADOPTABLE AND INEXPENSIVE TECHNOLOGIES THAT CAN GIVE FOREWARNING OF THE IMMINENT DANGER OR RISK WITH DUST ACCUMULATION. THERE IS A CRITICAL NEED TO DEVELOP A TECHNOLOGY TO MEASURE THE LEVEL OF DUST WITHIN A FACILITY AND ENABLE FACILITY MANAGERS TO TAKE APPROPRIATE DECISIONS TO PREVENT AN EXPLOSION. ONE OPPORTUNITY IS USING THE EXISTING SURVEILLANCE VIDEO CAMERAS IN THE FACILITIES TO MEASURE THE SUSPENDED DUST. PRELIMINARY RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT THE LIGHT EXTINCTION COEFFICIENT CAN ACCURATELY PREDICT THE SUSPENDED DUST CONCENTRATION. THE GOAL OF THIS PROPOSED RESEARCH IS TO DEVELOP A REAL-TIME SUSPENDED DUST CONCENTRATION MEASUREMENT TECHNOLOGY USING LIVE VIDEO STREAM AND THEN RAPIDLY INCREASE KNOWLEDGE AND ADOPTION OF THIS TECHNOLOGY. WE AIM TO ESTABLISH A STAKEHOLDER ADVISORY GROUP TO REFINE OUR RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND GUIDE OUR EXTENSION EDUCATION EFFORTS; DEVELOP THE TECHNOLOGY TO MEASURE SUSPENDED DUST CONCENTRATION; DEVELOP WEB AND SMARTPHONE APPLICATION INTERFACES; AND DELIVER DEMONSTRATION PROGRAMS TO INCREASE AWARENESS AND ADOPTION OF THIS TECHNOLOGY. THE DEMONSTRATION PROGRAMS WILL BE CONDUCTED IN COLLABORATION WITH INDUSTRY ASSOCIATIONS. THE PROPOSED TECHNOLOGY WOULD BENEFIT THE GRAIN HANDLING AND PROCESSING INDUSTRY TO PROTECT WORKER SAFETY AND REDUCE GRAIN DUST EXPLOSION INCIDENTS.
