MEAT GOAT PRODUCTION IN THE US HAS BECOME AN ATTRACTION ENTERPRISE FOR SMALL-SCALE OPERATIONS. THE US IS A MAJOR NET IMPORTER OF GOAT MEAT BECAUSE THE DOMESTIC DEMAD FOR GOAT MEAT IS UNSATISFIEDBY THE LEVEL OF DOMESTIC PRODUCTION. HOWEVER, PROFITABILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY IS DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE RAISING MEAT GOATS, DESPITE THE UNSATIFIED DEMAND FOR GOAT MEAT. PROPER USE OF BREED RESOURCES IS AN OFTEN UNDERAPPRECIATED AND MISGUIDED ASPECT OF MANAGEMENT THAT AFFECTS PROFITABILITY. THE POPULAR AND HEAVILY MARKETED BOER GOAT IMPORTED FROM SOUTH AFRICAWAS FOUND IN SUBSEQUENT RESEARCH TO BE A POOR CHOICE FOR MATERNAL GENETICS COMPARED TO THE HERITAGE LANDRACE SPANISH GOAT (US) AND THE IMPORTED KIKO BREED (NEW ZEALAND), BUT HAS SOME BENEFICIAL ATTRIBUTES AS A SIRE BREED FOR CROSSBREEDING. ANOTHER HERTIAGE US LANDRACE BREED THAT HAS NOT BEEN STUDIED FOR CROSSBREEDING POTENTIAL IS THE MYOTONIC. FULLBLOOD MYOTONIC GOATS HAVE DEMONSTRATED FAVORABLE PROFILES FOR INTERNAL PARASITISM. INTERNAL PARASITISM IS A PRIMARY OBSTACLE TO MEAT GOAT HERD PROFITABILITY. LEVEL OF PROFIT (OR LOSS) IS NOT KNOWN BY MANY MEAT GOAT MANAGERS BECAUSE THEIR ANNUAL DOE MANAGEMENT COSTS ARE NOT KNOWN.MEAT GOAT KIDS PRODUCED BY MYOTONIC, KIKO AND SPANISH SIRES WILL BE COMPARED FOR GROWTH AND HEALTH PERFORMANCE AND MARKET VALUE.
