WHEAT IS THE FOURTH MOST IMPORTANT CROP IN THE UNITED STATES, VALUED AT $20 BILLION ANNUALLY. HOWEVER, ITS PRODUCTION IS THREATENED BY BACTERIAL LEAF STREAK (BLS) WHICH CAN CAUSE UP TO 40% LOSS IN GRAIN YIELD. CURRENTLY, THERE ARE NO PROVEN IN-SEASON MANAGEMENT PRACTICES THAT GROWERS CAN USE TO MANAGE BLS. TO ENSURE STABLE FOOD SUPPLY AND INCOMES FOR GROWERS, THERE IS A NEED TO MINIMIZE YIELD LOSS CAUSED BY PLANT DISEASES SUCH AS BLS.THIS PROJECT'S OVERALL GOAL IS TO PREVENT YIELD LOSS CAUSED BY BLS IN WHEAT THROUGH EXTENSIVE SCREENING OF POTENTIAL NANOPARTICLES, BIOPESTICIDES, AND BIOLOGICAL CONTROL AGENTS THAT CAN EFFECTIVELY CONTROL BLS DEVELOPMENT IN SPRING WHEAT. THIS PROJECT ALSO SEEKS TO PERFORM COMPREHENSIVE VARIETY SCREENING TO DETERMINE VARIETIES THAT ARE TOLERANT TO BLS. PRODUCTS AND VARIETIES FOUND EFFECTIVE WILL BE DEMONSTRATED ON-FARM AT GROWERS' FIELDS. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES ARE 1) DETERMINE THE EFFICACY OF NANOPARTICLES AND SYNTHETIC BACTERICIDES IN CONTROLLING BLS, 2) IDENTIFY BIOPESTICIDES THAT ARE EFFECTIVE AGAINST BLS, AND 3) IDENTIFY WHEAT CULTIVARS THAT ARE TOLERANT TO BLS UNDER HIGH DISEASE PRESSURE.THE PROPOSED RESEARCH AND EXTENSION ACTIVITIES WILL LEAD TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF RECOMMENDATIONS THAT GROWERS CAN USE TO MANAGE BLS EFFECTIVELY. WE WILL ALSO TRAIN THE NEXT GENERATION OF PLANT PATHOLOGISTS. THIS INTEGRATED PROPOSAL (RESEARCH AND EXTENSION) ALIGNS WITH THE GOAL OF USDA-AFRI PRIORITY CODE A1701 IN THAT INFORMATION GENERATED FROM THE PROJECT ACTIVITIES WILL BE BENEFICIAL IN THE SUSTAINABLE AND ECONOMICALLY VIABLE PLANT PRODUCTION.
