RUNOFF AND DRAINAGE OF AGRICULTURAL POLLUTANTS CAN HAVE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS ON WATER QUALITY, INCLUDING THE SPREAD OF WATERBORNE DISEASES AND EUTROPHICATION. IN TURN, POOR WATER QUALITY CAN RESULT IN LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY, INCREASED WATER TREATMENT COSTS, AND NEGATIVE IMPACTS ON TOURISM AND WATERFRONT PROPERTY VALUE DUE TO UNSIGHTLY, AND POTENTIALLY TOXIC, ALGAL BLOOMS. ECOLOGICAL TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES ARE IN-SITU WATER REMEDIATION STRATEGIES THAT LEVERAGE THE INHERENT MECHANISMS OF MICROORGANISMS AND PLANTS TO TRANSFORM POLLUTANTS. SUCH TECHNOLOGIES REQUIRE LITTLE TO NO MODIFICATIONS TO EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE, ARE TYPICALLY INEXPENSIVE TO INSTALL AND MAINTAIN, AND IN MANY CASES, REQUIRE NO LAND TO BE TAKEN OUT OF PRODUCTION. ONE SUCH ECOLOGICAL TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY ARE AGRICULTURAL DENITRIFYING BIOREACTORS. BIOREACTORS ARE SUBSURFACE TRENCHES FILLED WITH WOODY SUBSTRATE WHICH INTERCEPT DRAINAGE WATERS FROM THE PRODUCTION AREA BEFORE BEING RELEASED INTO RECEIVING WATER BODIES. FOR OVER 20 YEARS, AGRICULTURAL BIOREACTORS HAVE BEEN EXTENSIVELY STUDIED AND SHOWN TO EFFECTIVELY REMEDIATE NITRATE FROM AGRICULTURAL RUNOFF. WHILE RECENT STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT AGRICULTURAL BIOREACTORS MAY ALSO EFFECTIVELY REDUCE CONCENTRATIONS OF PLANT AND MAMMALIAN PATHOGENS OF CONCERN (INCLUDING FECAL COLIFORM BACTERIA), MORE STUDIES ARE NEEDED TO DETERMINE WHICH OPERATING PARAMETERS AND CHARACTERISTICS ARE NECESSARY FOR REMEDIATION TO OCCUR.THROUGH A SERIES OF LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS, THE POTENTIAL OF WOODY SUBSTRATE-BASED BIOREACTORS TO REMEDIATE PATHOGENS OF CONCERN WILL BE ASSESSED. WOODY SUBSTRATE MATERIALS THAT ARE EASILY ACCESSIBLE TO AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS, INCLUDING PINE BARK AND/OR MIXED SPECIES WOODCHIPS, WILL BE EVALUATED FOR USE IN BIOREACTORS. NUTRIENT CONCENTRATIONS AND FLOW RATES WHICH ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF FIELD CONDITIONS WILL BE VARIED IN ORDER TO DETERMINE EFFECTS ON POTENTIAL REMEDIATION OF PATHOGENS. ALL DATA AND RESULTS WILL BE PUBLISHED IN PEER-REVIEWED JOURNALS AND MADE AVAILABLE ON A REGULARLY MAINTAINED PROFESSIONAL WEBSITE. THE PD WILL HOST AN IN-PERSON STAKEHOLDER WORKSHOP TO FURTHER EDUCATE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS ON THESE INEXPENSIVE AND EFFECTIVE TECHNOLOGIES. STAKEHOLDER INVOLVEMENT AND EDUCATION WILL BE CRITICAL TO THE SUCCESS OF FUTURE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY.CURRENTLY, THE POTENTIAL OF WOODY SUBSTRATE-BASED AGRICULTURAL BIOREACTORS TO REMEDIATE PATHOGENS FROM AGRICULTURAL RUNOFF AND DRAINAGE ARE LARGELY UNCHARACTERIZED, REPRESENTING A SUBSTANTIAL KNOWLEDGE GAP IN THIS FIELD. THE PROPOSED WORK WILL ADVANCE THE CURRENT KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD WHILE SPECIFICALLY ADDRESSING THE BIOENERGY, NATURAL RESOURCES, AND ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM PRIORITY AREA, AS WELL AS THE PLANT HEALTH, PRODUCTION AND PRODUCTS, AND AGRICULTURE SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM PRIORITY AREAS.
