TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS INVOLVING GENE DRIVE APPLICATIONS IN AGRICULTURE ARE PROCEEDING RAPIDLY. AT THE SAME TIME, THERE ARE CHALLENGES TO ACQUIRING UNDERLYING DATA IN WHICH TO CONDUCT RISK ASSESSMENTS, BASED UPON GAPS IN FUNDING AND GOVERNANCE SYSTEMS/PROGRAMS. WHILE RESEARCH FUNDING IS UNDOUBTEDLY IMPORTANT TO ADDRESS ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY RISKS, IT IS ALSO CRITICAL TO ESTABLISH A COORDINATED RESEARCH STRATEGY TO ACQUIRE APPROPRIATE DATA IN WHICH TO MAKE INFORMED GOVERNANCE DECISIONS. WHILE PREVIOUS WORK HAS EXAMINED WHAT A RESEARCH AGENDA FOR THE ECOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS OF SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY SHOULD ENTAIL, THERE HAS BEEN LIMITED STUDY ON WHAT AN INTERDISCIPLINARY RISK RESEARCH AGENDA, SPECIFICALLY FOR GENE DRIVE USE IN AGRICULTURE, SHOULD ENTAIL. ENABLING INTERDISCIPLINARY EXCHANGES MAY HELP ENSURE THAT RESPONSIBLE RESEARCH AND INNOVATION OF GENE DRIVE APPLICATIONS IN AGRICULTURE IS ACHIEVED.THIS PROJECT AIMS TO INFORM RISK ASSESSMENT RESEARCH STRATEGIES FOR GENE DRIVEAGRICULTURAL APPLICATIONS THROUGH INTERDISCIPLINARY DIALOGUE AND EXCHANGE WITH DIVERSE EXPERTS. IDENTIFYING CRITICAL DATA REQUIREMENTS AND KNOWLEDGE GAPS RELATED TO COMPLETING RISK ASSESSMENTS OF SELECT GENE DRIVE APPLICATIONS IN AGRICULTURE, AND CATEGORIZING THESE BASED ON NEAR-, MEDIUM-, AND LONG-TERM (REGULATORY) DECISION-MAKING NEEDS. THE OUTCOMES WILL HELP DEVELOP RESEARCH PRIORITIES AND FUNDING RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WILL ULTIMATELY BENEFIT U.S. FEDERAL REGULATORY AGENCIES TASKED WITH FUNDING RESEARCH ALONG WITH THOSE THAT HAVE OVERSIGHT OF GENE DRIVE APPLICATIONS IN AGRICULTURE.
