WHILE NANOMATERIALS HOLD SIGNIFICANT PROMISE IN AGRICULTURE, UNCERTAINTY EXISTS OVER THEIR POTENTIAL IMPACT TO HUMAN AND/OR ECOLOGICAL HEALTH. THE FOCUS OF THIS WORK IS ON UNDERSTANDING HOW NANOMATERIALS USED IN AGRICULTURAL APPLICATIONS POTENTIALLY FIND THEIR WAY TO CONSUMERSTHROUGH ADHESION TO PRODUCE. SPECIFICALLY, THE WORK FOCUSES ON EXPLORING THE FUNDAMENTAL THERMODYNAMICS OF INTERACTIONS BETWEEN AGRICULTURAL NANOMATERIALS AND PRODUCE SURFACES, WITH AN EMPHASIS ON UNDERSTANDING HOW ATTACHMENT TO- AND INCORPORATION INTO SURFACE-ASSOCIATED BIOFILMS INFLUENCES THE PERSISTENCE OF AGRICULTURAL NANOMATERIALS ON PRODUCE SURFACES FROM THE INITIAL CONTAMINATION STAGE THROUGH TO CONSUMPTION BY END USERS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP PRELIMINARY DATA EXPLORING THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THREE SPECIFIC NANOMATERIALS LIKELY TO SEE AGRICULTURAL APPLICATION, AND THE SURFACES OF THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PRODUCE, BOTH IN THE PRESENCE AND ABSENCE OF DIFFERENT NATURALLY-OCCURRING BIOFILMS.THE RESULTS OF THE WORK WILL PROVIDE AN INITIAL THERMODYNAMIC DATA SET WHICH CAN GUIDE FUTURE RESEARCH, AND ALLOW A QUANTITATIVE INITIAL ASSESSMENT OF HOW SPECIFIC BIOFILMS IMPACT NANOMATERIAL ATTACHMENT TO- AND DETACHMENT FROM PRODUCE SURFACES.THE WORK WILL ALSO PROVIDE INITIAL INSIGHTS THAT COULD ULTIMATELY LEAD TO ENHANCED WASHING STRATEGIES FOR REMOVAL OF ATTACHED AGRICULTURAL NANOMATERIALS.
