POLLINATION IS A KEY ECOSYSTEM SERVICE VITAL FOR THE SURVIVAL AND STABILITY OF THE BIOSPHERE.WHILE THE IMPORTANCE OF POLLINATORS IN SHAPING ECOSYSTEMS AND ECONOMIES IS WELL RECOGNIZED, WE ARE ALSO EXPERIENCING GLOBAL POLLINATOR DECLINE.MOST POLLINATOR RESEARCH IS LIMITED BY THE INABILITY TO LINK INDIVIDUAL FORAGERS AND THEIR FORAGING BEHAVIOR WITH POLLINATION SUCCESS, PATHOGEN AND PESTICIDE LEVELS OF THE POLLINATOR, AND REPRODUCTIVE FITNESS OF BOTH THE PLANT AND POLLINATOR.THESE DECLINES HAVE RAISED CONCERNS OVER FOOD SECURITY AND STABILITY OF THE SERVICES POLLINATORS PROVIDE TO WILD ECOSYSTEMS, AND HAVE LED TO A CALL FOR CLOSER MONITORING OF POLLINATOR POPULATIONS.DESPITE INTEREST IN IDENTIFYING THE MECHANISMS UNDERLYING POLLINATOR DECLINE, WE LACK SUFFICIENT INFRASTRUCTURE TO IDENTIFY INDIVIDUAL FORAGERS AND TEST THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE, INVASIVE SPECIES, PESTICIDES AND THE INTERACTION OF THESE ANTHROPOGENIC FACTORS ON POLLINATORS AND THEIR POLLINATION SERVICES.THE PROPOSED SMARTCAGE SYSTEM WOULD HELP PROVIDE A REPLICATED, FLEXIBLE, AUTOMATED DATA COLLECTION SYSTEM THAT WOULD HELP RESEARCHERS TO CONDUCT RESEARCH AIMED AT ELIMINATING THESE GAPS IN OUR SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING AND PROMOTING THE ABUNDANCE, DIVERSITY AND HEALTH OF POLLINATORS. THUS, WE WILL DEVELOP AN AUTOMATED FLIGHT CAGE SYSTEM (SMARTCAGE), WHICH WILL COLLECT A DIVERSITY OF FORAGING DATA IN REAL TIME UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS. THIS WILL ALLOW NOVEL INSIGHTS IN THE FORAGING BEHAVIOR OF POLLINATORS, THE FACTORS INFLUENCING POLLINATOR FORAGING, AND THE FITNESS IMPACTS OF FORAGING ON POLLINATOR REPRODUCTIVE SUCCESS.
