**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** FATIGUED PIG SYNDROME IS A CONDITION DESCRIBING PIGS THAT REFUSE TO MOVE DESPITE NO SIGNS OF INJURY OR DISEASE WHEN THEY ARE TRANSPORTED TO THE COMMERCIAL ABATTOIR. ECONOMICALLY, LOSSES ASSOCIATED WITH THESE PIGS CAN RANGE BETWEEN $14 AND $35 MILLION DOLLARS. WHEN CONSIDERING SUSTAINABILITY, THESE PIGS ACCOUNT FOR A LOSS OF 164 MILLION 4-OZ MEALS. THE HYPOTHESIS OF THESE STUDIES IS NICOTINAMIDE RIBOSIDE WILL DELAY THE ONSET OF FATIGUE IN FINISHED PIGS AND IMPROVE MEAT QUALITY AFTER THEY ARE HARVESTED. THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO DETERMINE THE DOSE AND SUPPLEMENTATION TIME OF NICOTINAMIDE RIBOSIDE THAT MAXIMIZES THE DELAY OF THE ONSET OF FATIGUE, DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF THE DOSES AND SUPPLEMENTATION TIMES ON FRESH MEAT QUALITY, AND EXPLORE THE BIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR IMPROVED FATIGUE RESISTANCE AND MEAT QUALITY. THE WORK FROM THIS PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO YIELD A NICOTINAMIDE RIBOSIDE DOSAGE AND SUPPLEMENTATION TIME RECOMMENDATION THAT WILL MAXIMIZE THE TIME TO THE ONSET OF FATIGUE OF LIVE PIGS AND IMPROVE THEIR MEAT QUALITY AFTER HARVEST. THIS PROJECT WILL HAVE A TREMENDOUS IMPACT FOR THE INDUSTRY BECAUSE IT WILL PROVIDE PRODUCERS WITH A SUPPLEMENTATION STRATEGY TO REDUCE THE INCIDENCE OF FATIGUED PIG SYNDROME, WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY IMPROVING MEAT QUALITY FOR ALL PIGS. THIS IN TURN, WILL INCREASE THE PROFITABILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY OF PORK PRODUCTION.
