**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** AGRICULTURALLY IMPORTANT ANIMALS INCLUDING PIGS AND CHICKENS ARE SICKENED BY MANY DIFFERENT DISEASES INCLUDING CORONAVIRUSES. WE CAN SEE THE DEVASTATING EFFECT CORONAVIRUSES CAN HAVE BY LOOKING AT THE ZOONOTIC DISEASE COVID-19 THAT IS CURRENTLY INFECTING HUMANS. IN MUCH THE SAME WAY THESE SWINE AND CHICKEN CORONAVIRUSES CAN CAUSE MANY DEATHS TO AGRICULTURALLY IMPORTANT ANIMAL SPECIES. WE ARE WORKING ON A TOOL THAT ALLOWS US TO QUICKLY FIND GENES IN ANIMALS THAT CAN CAUSE RESISTANCE TO THESE TYPES OF VIRUSES. THIS WORK WILL ALLOW US TO BREED ANIMALS THAT ARE RESISTANT TO VIRUS INFECTION MAKING THE SAFE FROM THE ANIMAL VIRUSES AND POTENTIALLY LIMITING THE EPOSURE OF HUMANS TO THESE DISEASES THAT LIKE TO JUMP ACROSS SPECIES. IN ADDITON, WE ARE LOOKING AT HOW DIFFERENT ANIMALS FIGHT OFF VIRAL INFECTIONS. CHICKENS THAT HAVE SEEN THESE TYPES OF VIRUSES FOR MANY THOUSANDS OF YEARS MAY HAVE EVOLVED BETTER STRATEGIES THAN NEW HOSTS SUCH AS PIGS TO FIGHT THESE VIRUSES. BY UNDERSTANDING HOW DIFERENT ANIMALS FIGHT THE VIRUS WE MIGHT COME UP WITH NEW IDEAS TO FIGHT INFECTION IN DIFFERENT SPECIES.
