WELFARE OF POULTRY (BROILERS) IS A GREAT CONCERN FOR PRODUCERS, PROCESSORS AND CONSUMERS. TRANSPORTATION OF BIRDS FROM THEPRODUCTION FARMS TO THE PROCESSING FACILITIES (LIVE HAUL) CAN IMPOSE SIGNIFICANT THERMAL STRESS ON THE BIRDS. THE MAIN GOAL OF THEPROJECT IS TO ENHANCE BROILER WELFARE BY MINIMIZING THERMAL STRESS DURING LIVE HAUL THROUGH DESIGN OF FAN SYSTEMS TO IMPROVE AIRFLOW. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT ARE (I) DEVELOP AN EXPERIMENTAL MODEL SYSTEM, (II) DEVELOP, REFINE ANDVALIDATE COMPUTATIONAL MODELS TO SIMULATE AIRFLOW AND REDESIGN FAN SYSTEM, (III) EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF IMPROVED AIR FLOW SYSTEM(FAN DESIGN/CONFIGURATION) ON THERMAL STRESS ON THE BIRDS IN THE FIELD AND (IV) EVALUATE THE IMPACT OF THERMAL STRESS MITIGATIONSTRATEGIES ON MEAT QUALITY AND FOOD SAFETY. THE REDESIGNED FAN SYSTEMS WILL REDUCE THE HEAT STRESS ON THE BROILERS DURING LIVEHAUL FROM BROILER FARMS TO THE PROCESSING PLANTS. THE OUTCOMES OF THE RESEARCH WILL IMPROVE WELFARE OF BROILERS DURING LIVE HAUL.
