SALMONELLA HAS BECOME AN UNAVOIDABLE COST OF POULTRY PRODUCTION. CONTAMINATED POULTRY PRODUCTS HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO MULTIPLE FOODBORNE OUTBREAKS RECENTLY. VARIOUS TYPES OF SALMONELLA, INCLUDING THE EMERGING DRUG-RESISTANT TYPES, ARE ENCOUNTERED IN THE POULTRY PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENTS RAISING SIGNIFICANT THREAT TO FOOD SAFETY. DUE TO VARIOUS SOURCES OF SALMONELLA ON FARMS, AND MANY TYPES OF SALMONELLA HARBORING POULTRY, IT IS DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE PATHOGEN USING A SINGLE APPROACH. THE RECENT OUTBREAKS OF SALMONELLA READING THROUGH TURKEY PRODUCTS, AND SALMONELLA INFANTIS THROUGH CHICKEN PRODUCTS HAVE ALARMED THE INDUSTRY ON THESE EMERGING SALMONELLA IN LIVE POULTRY PRODUCTION. MOREOVER, THE ISSUES RELATED TO ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE IN PRODUCTION AND CONSEQUENT DECREASE IN THE PROFITABILITY HAVE GENERATED A RIGOROUS SEARCH FOR LONG-STANDING APPROACHES FOR SALMONELLA CONTROL. WE RECENTLY FOUND THAT A DAIRY-ORIGINATED PROBIOTIC AND A SALMONELLA VACCINE COULD NOTICEABLY REDUCE DRUG-RESISTANT SALMONELLA HEIDELBERG IN TURKEYS. IN THIS PROJECT, WE WILLDETERMINE THE EFFICACY OF THIS UNIQUE COMBINATION AGAINST TWOEMERGING TYPES OF SALMONELLA, SALMONELLAREADING IN TURKEYS, AND SALMONELLAINFANTIS IN CHICKENS, RESPECTIVELY, WITHOUT COMPROMISING POULTRY GUT HEALTH. THE OUTCOMES THIS RESEARCH WILL HAVE AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT ON IMPROVING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE US POULTRY INDUSTRY HEAVILY AFFECTED BY THESE PATHOGENS.
