**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** RECLAIMED WATER HAS BEEN CONSIDERED AN IMPORTANT ALTERNATIVE SOURCE WATER TO MITIGATE WATER SHORTAGE. HOWEVER, USING RECLAIMED WATER RELATED TO ANY HUMAN CONSUMPTION INCLUDING AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD PRODUCTION RAISES SERIOUS HEALTH CONCERNS. IN PARTICULAR, ELEVATED LEVELS OF PHARMACEUTICALS SUCH AS ANTIMICROBIALS AND AS WELL AS MICROPLASTICS SUCH AS MICROBEADS FROM COSMETOLOGY AND FIBERS FROM LAUNDRY ARE OFTEN OBSERVED IN TREATED WASTEWATER. TO ELUCIDATE THE INTERACTIVE EFFECTS BETWEEN MICROPLASTICS AND ANTIMICROBIALS IN AGROECOSYSTEMS, WE PROPOSE A FOUR-YEAR STUDY WITH THREE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: (1) ROLES OF MICROPLASTICS ON ANTIMICROBIALS (2) UPTAKES OF ANTIMICROBIALS IN THE PRESENCE OF MICROPLASTICS, AND (3) RISK REDUCTION STRATEGIES TO MITIGATE THEIR IMPACTS ON CROP PRODUCTION. THROUGH COLLABORATION WITH USDA-ARS, WE WILL CONDUCT MICROPLASTIC AND ANTIMICROBIAL SURVEYS FROM FIELD SITES THAT HAVE BEEN IRRIGATED WITH RECYCLED MUNICIPAL WASTEWATERS FOR LONG TERM. CONTROLLED LABORATORYSTUDIES WILL BE CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE KINETICS OF DEGRADATION AND ADSORPTION-DESORPTION OF A VARIETY OF ANTIMICROBIALS WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF MICROPLASTICS IN BOTH WASTEWATER AND SOIL WATER. MESOCOSM EXPERIMENTS WILL BE USED TO EXAMINE THE EFFECTS OF MICROPLASTICS-ANTIMICROBIALS INTERACTIONS ON SOIL MICROBES AND THEIR GAINING OF ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE. GROWTH PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED CROPS IN GREENHOUSE ENVIRONEMNTS WILL BE EVALUATED UNDER THE INFLUENCES OF MICROPLASTICS AND ANIMICORBIALS. WE WILL ALSO TEST SOIL AMENDMENT AND IRRIGATION MANAGEMENT PRACTICES TO MITIGATE THE IMPACTS OF MICROPLASTICS AND ANTIMICROBIALS ON SOIL QUALITY AND PLANT GROWTH. A BOX MODEL DESCRIBING THE IMPACTS OF RECLAIMED WATERS IN AGROECOSYSTEMS WILL BE DEVELOPED AND CONVEYED TO REGULATORY AGENCIES AND DECISION-MAKERS.
