IRRIGATED AGRICULTURE IN THE SOUTHERN GREAT PLAINS IS THREATENED BY DECLINING OGALLALA AQUIFER. PARTIAL PIVOTS ARE BECOMING COMMON AS WATER IS NOT ENOUGH TO GROW TRADITIONAL CROPS ON ENTIRE PIVOT. WE PROPOSE A NOVEL CONCEPT OF REARRANGING THE UNIRRIGATED PART OF THE PIVOT USING AERODYNAMIC PRINCIPLES INTO CONCENTRIC CIRCLES OF LIVE BUFFER STRIPS OF NATIVE PERENNIAL GRASSES (CBS) FOR MULTIPLE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES. ALTHOUGH CIRCULAR BUFFER STRIPS ARE NEVER RESEARCHED, LITERATURE ON SHELTER BELTS, BUFFER STRIPS, AND PERENNIAL GRASSES ARE EXTREMELY ENCOURAGING WITH EXPECTED BENEFITS FROM THE NEW SYSTEM. PRELIMINARY RESULTS (FROM A NIFA SEED GRANT) SHOW SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS IN MICROCLIMATE, STRESS RESPONSE, GROWTH AND CORN YIELD. TWO FIELD TRIALS (1. ASSESSING CIRCULAR BUFFER STRIPS [EXISTING] 2. ASSESSING INDIVIDUAL GRASS AND FLOWERING FORB SPECIES TO CBS BENEFITS [NEW]) FOR THREE YEARS WILL BE CONDUCTED AT CLOVIS, NM AND GARDEN CITY, KS (TRIAL 2). THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES ASSESS ECOSYSTEM SERVICES FROM SINGLE AND MULTIPLE CBS 1). ON MICROCLIMATE, STRESS PHYSIOLOGY, WATER USE EFFICIENCY AND CORN PRODUCTIVITY 2). SOIL HEALTH, C AND N SEQUESTRATION, MICROBIAL DIVERSITY AND GREEN HOUSE GAS EMISSIONS 3). EVALUATE ROLE OF DIFFERENT GRASS SPECIES AND FLOWERING FORBE SPECIES INDIVIDUALLY OR IN COMBINATIONS ON CBS PERFORMANCE. DATA COLLECTED WILL BE USED TO UNDERSTAND SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF BENEFITS TO DIFFERENT ECOSYSTEM SERVICES IN THE CENTER PIVOT FROM SINGLE AND MULTIPLE CBS AND TO DEVELOP REGRESSION MODELS. A NOVEL TECHNOLOGY WILL BE DEVELOPED TO IMPROVE SUSTAINABILITY OF OGALLALA AQUIFER.
