SIMPLIFICATION OF GLOBAL LANDSCAPES, DRIVEN BY THE EXPANSION AND INTENSIFICATION OF AGRICULTURE, HAS PROVIDED IMMEDIATE GAINS FOR AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION, BUT ALSO DEGRADED BENEFICIAL ECOSYSTEM PROCESSES THAT SUPPORT CONTINUED AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION. THERE IS FIELD-SCALE EVIDENCE OF LAND USE DIVERSITY'S POSITIVE IMPACTS ON ECOSYSTEM HEALTH AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION. HOWEVER, THE IMPACTS OF LAND USE DIVERSITY AT LANDSCAPE SCALES, AT WHICH LAND USE INTERACTS WITH BIOPHYSICAL PHENOMENA AND HUMAN ACTIVITIES, IS NOT WELL UNDERSTOOD. OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE THAT SUPPORT LONG-TERM NATIONAL FOOD SECURITY BY CHARACTERIZING HOW AND WHY LANDSCAPE SIMPLIFICATION AFFECTS ECOSYSTEM HEALTH AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY, AND BY IDENTIFYING BARRIERS TO LANDSCAPE DIVERSIFICATION.IN THIS PROJECT WE ADDRESS THIS GOAL BY MODELING HOW LANDSCAPE DIVERSITY RELATES TO CROP PRODUCTION ACROSS THE U.S. AND BY MODELING HOW LOCAL CONTEXTUAL FACTORS AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONCERNS INFLUENCE THIS RELATIONSHIP. THESE MODELS WILL ENABLE QUANTIFICATION OF THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS AND TRADEOFFS ASSOCIATED WITH LANDSCAPE DIVERSIFICATION PROCESSES. MOREOVER, THIS PROJECT WILL GENERATE KNOWLEDGE ON HOW HUMAN DECISION-MAKING IMPACTS LANDSCAPE DIVERSIFICATION BY COLLECTING DATA VIA STAKEHOLDER INTERVIEWS AND AN ELECTRONIC SURVEY, AND WILL USE FOCUS GROUP WORKSHOPS TO INCOPORATE PRACTICIONER KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF LANDSCAPE DIVERSIFICATION STRATEGIES. OVERALL, THIS PROJECT WILL GENERATE KNOWLEDGE ON THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN LANDSCAPE DIVERSITY, AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION, AND HUMAN ACTIVITIES THAT WILL ENABLE DEVELOPMENT OF LOCALLY-RELEVANT LANDSCAPE DIVERSIFICATION STRATEGIES THAT PROVIDE SYNERGISTIC BENEFITS FOR AGRICULTURAL AND ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS AND THAT SUPPORT THE LONG-TERM VIABILITY OF U.S. AGRICULTURE.
