PROVIDING SUITABLE ANIMAL CARE IS VITAL FOR MAXIMIZING PRODUCTIVITY AND ENSURING ANIMAL WELFARE. HOWEVER, CURRENT LABOR-BASED MONITORING PRACTICES CANNOT ENSURE QUALITY ANIMAL CARE BECAUSE ASSESSING THE HEALTH STATUS OF INDIVIDUAL ANIMALS IS OFTEN SUBJECTIVE, DEPENDING ON ONE'S EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE. WE PROPOSE TO DEVELOP A WIRELESS MONITORING AND ASSESS SYSTEM, WHICH MONITORS ANIMAL BEHAVIORS AS WELL AS MEASURES MAJOR BIOMETRICS OF PIGS. THEN, THE DATA WILL BE PROCESSED TO REFLECT HEALTH STATUS OF PIGS. SPECIFICALLY, APPLICATION OF WIRELESS SENSOR NODES (WSNS) WILL ALLOW US TO OBTAIN BIOMETRICS OF PIGS THAT CAN REFLECT THEIR HEALTH STATUS AND PRODUCTION VALUE. A CUSTOMIZED RADIO-FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION (RFID) SYSTEM WILL BE TAGGED TO PIGS' EARS TO CONTINUOUSLY MONITOR DISTANCE TRAVELLED AND BODY TEMPERATURE, AND AUTOMATICALLY OBTAIN DAILY WEIGHT GAIN FROM EACH PIG. WE WILL ALSO INSTALL THE RESERVOIR COMPUTING SYSTEM, BRAIN INSPIRED DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM, THAT CAN ACT ASA NOVEL DECISION SUPPORTING TOOLS TO ALLEVIATE EFFORTS ASSOCIATED WITH ANIMAL CARE. CONVENTIONAL ANIMAL HUSBANDRY APPROACHES WILL ALSO BE APPLIED TO DEMONSTRATE EFFECTIVENESS OF OUR PROPOSED SYSTEM. THE PROPOSED SYSTEM CAN BE APPLIED AS A DECISION SUPPORTING TOOL TO IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY AND WELFARE. THE AUTOMATED MONITORING SYSTEM WILL BE DESIGNED BY THE INTERDISCIPLINARY EXPERTISE FROM ENGINEERING AND ANIMAL SCIENCES. TO THE BEST OF OUR KNOWLEDGE, THE PROPOSED MONITORING SYSTEM HAS NOT BEEN APPLIED IN ANIMAL PRODUCTION IN UNITED STATES.
