**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** CROP PHENOMICS IS A NEW TRANSDISCIPLINARY FIELD OF RESEARCH THAT IS A CRITICAL INTERFACE BETWEEN PLANT BIOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND DATA SCIENCES. PHENOMICS DATA REFERS TO SENSORY DATA ACQUIRED FROM HIGH-THROUGHPUT SENSING/AUTOMATION EQUIPMENT THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH CROP PHENOTYPES/TRAITS. CROP PHENOTYPING IS A COMPLEX PROCESS AS THE PLANT PHENOTYPE RESULTS FROM INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE GENETIC FRAMEWORK, DYNAMICALLY CHANGING ENVIRONMENT, AND COMPLEX PLANT PHYSIOLOGY. IN RECENT YEARS, PHENOMICS TECHNOLOGIES HAVE CHALLENGED TRADITIONAL CROP PHENOTYPING APPROACHES TO STUDY GENOTYPE-PHENOTYPE-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS AND TOWARDS CROP IMPROVEMENT EFFORTS. THE STRONG MOTIVATION FOR THIS PROJECT COMES FROM THE NEED TO DEVELOP UNIQUE INTERDISCIPLINARY SKILLSETS AND PROMOTE GENUINE INTEREST AMONGST UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN THIS FIELD OF RESEARCH FOR PHENOMICS DATA-DRIVEN DISCOVERIES FOR IMPACT ON GLOBAL FOOD SECURITY. IN THIS PROJECT, OUR MENTORS WILL PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL AND OUTREACH BENEFITS TO 8 STUDENTS EACH YEAR FOR 9.5 WEEKS FOR 4 YEARS. THE MAJORITY OF TARGETED PARTICIPANTS WILL BE FROM AN UNDERREPRESENTED COMMUNITY. THROUGH PROPOSED ACTIVITIES IN COMPLEMENTARY RESEARCH TOPICS IN PHENOMICS BIG DATA MANAGEMENT RESEARCH SUCH AS DEVELOPMENT OF AUTOMATED SENSING/IMAGE PROCESSING TOOLS, PHENOMIC DATA-BASED VISUALIZATION AND HYPOTHESIS EXTRACTION TOOLS, AND PHENOMIC DATA-BASED VARIETY DEVELOPMENT, WE ANTICIPATE THAT THE STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE TRANSDISCIPLINARY EDUCATION, DEVELOP TECHNICAL AND RESEARCH EXPERTISE, AND DEVELOP COMMUNICATION AND PROFESSIONAL SKILLS. THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL ALSO HAVE A PROGRESSIVE IMPACT TO PROMOTE CROP IMPROVEMENT ADVANCES BY CREATING RELIABLE AND RAPID TOOLS ASSOCIATED WITH PHENOMICS. WE ANTICIPATE THAT THROUGH THIS EXPERIENCE, WE WILL BE ABLE TO ATTRACT YOUNG MINDS FOR POTENTIAL CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN AGRICULTURAL ANALYTICS.
