THE PROJECT ADDRESSES THE PROGRAM AREA PRIORITY OF CARE (A1701) IN THE CROSS-CUTTING PROGRAMS. THE TRADITIONAL WINDOWS OF OPPORTUNITY FOR MANURE APPLICATION IN MINNESOTA (FALL AND SPRING) HAVE BECOME INCREASINGLY SHORTER IN THE PAST FEW YEARS DUE TO AN INCREASING TREND OF WET WEATHER DURING THIS TIMEFRAME, KEEPING FARMERS OUT OF THE FIELDS. THERE IS A CRITICAL NEED TO OPEN UP THE WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY FOR MANURE APPLICATION AS CLIMATE CHANGE CONTINUES TO DRIVE UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER PATTERNS. ONE OPPORTUNITY IS USING LIQUID MANURE AS A SIDEDRESSED NITROGEN (N) SOURCE FOR CORN SO THAT IT CAN BE APPLIED IN THE SUMMER AND USED IMMEDIATELY BY A GROWING CROP. PRELIMINARY RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT THIS IS FEASIBLE BUT MORE INFORMATION AND OUTREACH IS NEEDED TO FINE-TUNE THE PRACTICE AND TO RAPIDLY INCREASE KNOWLEDGE (SHORT-TERM OUTCOME) AND ADOPTION (MEDIUM-TERM OUTCOME) OF SIDEDRESSING CORN WITH LIQUID MANURE. SPECIFICALLY, WE AIM TO ESTABLISH A STAKEHOLDER GROUP TO GUIDE OUR RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND EDUCATIONAL EFFORTS; CONDUCT FIELD EXPERIMENTS TO INFORM THE CREATION OF A BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES (BMP) TOOLBOX; AND DELIVER DEMONSTRATION/EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF EQUIPMENT AND TECHNIQUES USED FOR SIDEDRESSING MANURE. RESEARCH PROJECTS WILL EVALUATE THE IMPACT OF SIDEDRESSING MANURE INTO CORN ON CORN YIELDS AS WELL AS SOYBEAN YIELDS IN THE FOLLOWING YEAR AND ASSESS WHAT CORN GROWTH STAGE IS OPTIMAL FOR SIDEDRESSING MANURE WITH A DRAGLINE SYSTEM. OUTREACH INCLUDES FOUR EXTENSION EVENTS (TWO RESEARCH FIELD DAYS AND TWO MANURE SIDEDRESSING DEMONSTRATION DAYS) AND PUBLICATION OF THE ONLINE BMP TOOLBOX.
