INADEQUATE VENTILATION DESIGN TO CONTROL INDOOR AIR QUALITY AND THE THERMAL ENVIRONMENT HAVE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS ON THE PRODUCTIVITY, HEALTH, AND WELL-BEING OF PIGS. CURRENT ENGINEERING VENTILATION DESIGN STANDARDS AND EXTENSION GUIDELINES ARE SEVERELY OUTDATED, COMBINED WITH THE RAPID ACCELERATION IN SWINE GENETICS HAS RESULTED IN FACILITIES CONSTRUCTED TODAY THAT DO NOT MEET THE THERMAL NEEDS OF THE PIGS. OUR PROPOSAL SYNERGISTICALLY UNITES RESEARCH AND EXTENSION TO ACHIEVE OUR ULTIMATE GOAL OF UPDATING VENTILATION DESIGN STANDARDS/GUIDELINES AND DISSEMINATING THEM THROUGH UNIQUE CHANNELS TO REACH PRODUCERS, DESIGN ENGINEERS, EXTENSION SPECIALISTS, AND BUILDERS. THIS GOAL WILL BE ACHIEVED BY CONDUCTING THE HEAT AND MOISTURE PRODUCTION RATE RESEARCH AND DEDICATING INTENSE EFFORT DIRECTLY TOWARDS STANDARD DEVELOPMENT AND DISSEMINATION. THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE CURRENT, EVIDENCE-BASED, NATIONALLY AVAILABLE STANDARDS AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON SWINE VENTILATION BASED ON REGIONAL CLIMATE TO POSITIVELY IMPACT SUSTAINABLE SWINE PRODUCTION BY REDUCING THERMAL STRESSORS IN ALL SWINE HOUSING SYSTEMS; THEREBY, IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY AND ECONOMIC RETURN FOR PRODUCERS. OUR TEAM OF RESEARCH AND EXTENSION AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERS ARE WELL-VERSED IN ANIMAL-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS AND SWINE HOUSING AS WELL AS UNCONDITIONALLY DEDICATED TO THE SUCCESS OF VENTILATION IMPROVEMENT FOR THE US SWINE INDUSTRY.
