BOVINE RESPIRATORY DISEASE AFFECTS APPROXIMATELY ONE IN FIVE BEEF AND DAIRY CATTLE IN NORTH AMERICA. AS A RESULT, THIS DISEASE LEADS TO ALMOST A BILLION DOLLARS IN LOSSES ANNUALLY IN THE UNITED STATES. DISEASE MANAGEMENT IS OFTEN CHALLENGING BECAUSE AS A HOST OF CAUSATIVE MICROBES (VIRUSES AND BACTERIA) OR PATHOGEN COMBINATIONS HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH BOVINE RESPIRATORY DISEASE. THE INCREASE IN ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE FURTHER COMPLICATES TREATMENT DECISIONS AND EFFICACY. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO BUILD A USER-FRIENDLY ON-FARM DEVICE THAT DETERMINES WHICH ANTIBIOTIC SHOULD BE GIVEN IDENTIFYING THE CAUSATIVE PATHOGEN(S) IN EACH SICK ANIMAL. THIS TEAM WILL ACHIEVE THIS GOAL BY: I) DETERMINING THE TECHNICAL AND SOCIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEVICE, AND II) DESIGNING, BUILDING, AND EVALUATING THE DEVICE ON FARMS. AS A RESULT OF THIS PROJECT, THE TEAM EXPECTS TO UNDERSTAND THE FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR ADOPTING NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN ANIMAL AGRICULTURE AND PROVIDE A DEVICE THAT PRODUCERS ANDVETERINARIANS CAN USE IN THE FIELD TO HELP GUIDE THE TREATMENT OF BOVINE RESPIRATORY DISEASE. WHEN USED ON BEEF AND DAIRY FARMS, THE USER-FRIENDLY DEVICE BUILT HERE WILL HELP REDUCE THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE DISEASE, IMPROVE ANIMAL HEALTH, AND DECREASE EXCESSIVE ANTIBIOTIC USAGE.
