CURRENT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR CASH-GRAIN CROPPING SYSTEMS AIMED AT IMPROVING KEY COMPONENTS OF SOIL HEALTH-AGGREGATION, BIODIVERSITY, AND ORGANIC MATTER-DO NOT CONSISTENTLY IMPROVE THESE PARAMETERS, AND OFTEN REDUCE YIELDS RELATIVE TO CONVENTIONAL MANAGEMENT. WE BELIEVE IT IS POSSIBLE TO BUILD SOIL HEALTH AND SYSTEM RESILIENCE VIA THE SUSTAINABLE INTENSIFICATION APPROACH OF RE-INTEGRATING GRAIN AND LIVESTOCK SYSTEMS, CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF COVER CROPS, MANURE, AND REDUCED TILLAGE TO EMERGE.WE PROPOSE 5 SUSTAINABLE INTENSIFICATION INTERVENTIONS IN THE CONVENTIONAL AND ORGANIC GRAIN SYSTEMS OF OUR 28-Y-OLD CROPPING SYSTEM EXPERIMENT-THE WISCONSIN INTEGRATED CROPPING SYSTEMS TRIAL (WICST).THESE TRANSFORMATIONAL INTERVENTIONS ARE DESIGNED TO BOTH PERENNIALIZE THE EXTANT CROPPING SYSTEMS IN DRAMATIC FASHION AND REINTEGRATE THE GRAIN SYSTEMS WITH LIVESTOCK IN WAYS THAT ENABLE AND FACILITATE MANURE SPREADING, COVER CROP ESTABLISHMENT, AND REDUCED SOIL DISTURBANCE. KNOWLEDGE GENERATED BY THIS RESEARCH DIRECTLY ADDRESSES THE GOAL OF INVESTIGATING HOW CHANGES IN CROPPING SYSTEMS, INCLUDING DIVERSIFICATION OR INTENSIFICATION, AFFECT CROP PERFORMANCE, SOIL HEALTH, AND OTHER OUTCOMES BENEFICIAL TO SYSTEM RESILIENCE UNDER PROGRAM AREA PRIORITY A1102-FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION SYSTEMS.PROPOSED SUSTAINABLE INTENSIFICATION INTERVENTIONS WILL BE VETTED AND FINE-TUNED BY OUR WICST STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT GROUP, WHICH IS NESTED WITHIN A BROADER SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE STAKEHOLDER COMMUNITY CONVENED ANNUALLY BY UW-MADISON'S CENTER FOR INTEGRATED AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS. INPUT FROM THE STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT GROUP WILL ENSURE A HIGH DEGREE OF RELEVANCE OF OUR MANAGEMENT TREATMENTS AND HIGH IMPACT FOR OUR RESULTS, WHICH WILL BE SHARED AT FIELD DAYS, ON OUR WEBSITE, AND IN SEVERAL UW-MADISON COURSES.
