TO REDUCE DEATH AND ILLNESS FROM NOROVIRUS IN U.S. CONSUMERS, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO PREVENT INFECTIOUS NOROVIRUS CONTAMINATION OF FRESH PRODUCE. HOWEVER, IT IS DIFFICULT TO PREVENT NOROVIRUS CONTAMINATION ON FRESH PRODUCE BECAUSE LEVELS OF INFECTIOUS NOROVIRUS CONTAMINATION ON PRODUCE IS UNKNOWN, ITS RISK TO US CONSUMERS IS ALSO UNKNOWN, AND PREVENTION STRATEGIES HAVE NOT BEEN PRIORITIZED. THUS, OUR OBJECTIVES ARE TO:DEVELOP A VALIDATED LABORATORY METHOD TO DETECT INFECTIOUS NOROVIRUS CONTAMINATION IN THE AGRICULTURAL ENVIRONMENTDEVELOP A NEW RISK MODEL TO MEASURE THE RISK TO US CONSUMERSPRIORITIZE PRODUCE SAFETY STRATEGIES TO REDUCE INFECTIOUS NOROVIRUS CONTAMINATION ON PRODUCE IN THE HARVEST AND POST-HARVEST ENVIRONMENT THAT MAXIMIZE PUBLIC HEALTH IMPACTTHESE IMPACTS WILL IMPROVE THE SAFETY OF U.S. AGRICULTURAL MARKETS AND CONSUMERS AND IMPROVE THE U.S. AGRICULTURAL ECONOMY.
