THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP AND OPTIMIZE FOREST LOGGING RESIDUE HARVEST AND COLLECTION LOGISTICS IN THE EASTERN UNITED STATES. PROJECT OBJECTIVES INCLUDE: (1) INVESTIGATE PRODUCTION RATE AND COSTS OF VARIOUS METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR FOREST LOGGING RESIDUE HARVEST AND COLLECTION, (2) CONFIGURE AND OPTIMIZE THE LOGISTICS OF LOGGING RESIDUE HARVEST AND COLLECTION SYSTEMS, (3) QUANTIFY THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS AND IMPLEMENTATION OF BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON FOREST RESIDUE HARVEST AND COLLECTION, AND (4) CONDUCT TECHNO-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE FOREST LOGGING RESIDUE SUPPLY CHAIN AND MARKET IMPACT POTENTIAL IN THE REGION.THE PROJECT WILL DIVIDE THE EASTERN U.S. INTO FOUR PHYSIOGRAPHIC REGIONS; NORTHEAST U.S., UPPER MID-ATLANTIC, LOWER MID-ATLANTIC, AND SOUTHEAST U.S. AS EACH OF THESE REGIONS IS UNIQUE IN TERMS OF SPECIES COMPOSITION, TERRAIN, CLIMATE, AND TYPICAL TIMBER HARVEST PRACTICES. THIS WILL ALLOW FOR DEVELOPMENT OF MORE PRECISE AND REGIONALLY SPECIFIC LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MODELS OF FOREST LOGGING RESIDUE HARVEST AND COLLECTION. THE PROJECT IS UNIQUE AND INNOVATIVE TO INTEGRATE THE BIOMASS LOGISTICS IN THE EASTERN U.S.; AND TO IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY OF FOREST RESIDUE HARVEST AND COLLECTION, TO GENERATE BIOMASS PRICE CURVES SPECIFIC TO THE REGION, AND TO PROVIDE DATA SHARING ACROSS THE EASTERN REGION FOR FURTHER UTILIZATION OF RESIDUE BIOMASS AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE BIOECONOMY.
