HUMAN NOROVIRUSES ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF FOODBORNE ILLNESS AND SALMONELLA ENTERICA IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF FOODBORNE DEATH IN THE US. IN ADDITION TO BEING PREVALENT, THESE PATHOGENS ARE HIGHLY DIVERSE AND EASILY TRANSMITTED. ONE OF THE MAJOR IMPEDIMENTS TO CONTROLLING THE SPREAD OF THESE PATHOGENS IS THE INABILITY TO RAPIDLY IDENTIFY OUTBREAKS AND CONTAMINATION IN A TIMELY MANNER TO TAKE ACTION TO PREVENT FURTHER SPREAD. IN ORDER TO DO THIS, A RAPID, PORTABLE DEVICE CAPABLE OF NOT JUST DETECTING NOROVIRUSES OR SALMONELLA, BUT ALSO OF DETERMINING THE SUBTYPE OR STRAIN PRESENT. THIS ENABLES THE ABILITY TO MATCH UP VICTIMS OF POISONING WITH THE SAME AGENT AS WELL AS THE RESPONSIBLE SOURCE. IF A GROUP OF VICTIMS AS WELL AS A FOOD THEY ATE ALL HAVE THE SAME SUBTYPE OF SALMONELLA OR NOROVIRUS, THEY ARE LIKELY TO BE INVOLVED IN A COMMON OUTBREAK AND ACTION CAN BE TAKEN.PORTABLE SENSING DEVICES FOR THESE PATHOGENS EXIST, BUT ALL HAVE ISSUES THAT LIMIT THEIR EFFECTIVENESS IN EARLY OUTBREAK IDENTIFICATION. A PORTABLE SENSING PLATFORM HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY DEVELOPED BY THE CO-PI WITH PROMISING RESULTS FOR CLINICAL DETECTION OF PROTEINS. THIS PLATFORM DETECTS A SMALL AMOUNT OF A TARGET PROTEIN, DIFFERENTIATES SIMILAR VERSIONS OF A PROTEIN, AND DETECTS TARGET PROTEIN IN DIRTY SAMPLES. HOWEVER, THIS DEVICE HAS NOT BEEN APPLIED TO VIRAL/BACTERIAL/AGRICULTURAL PATHOGENS. THIS PROPOSAL SEEKS TO DEVELOP AND EVALUATE THIS PLATFORM FOR PORTABLE DETECTION AND SUBTYPING OF NOROVIRUSES AND SALMONELLA ENTERICA AS A TOOL TO IDENTIFY OUTBREAKS EARLY AND REDUCE THE SPREAD OF FOODBORNE PATHOGENS.
