THIS PROJECT FOCUSES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW GEOSPATIAL TOOL TO MONITOR SEASONAL CROP (CORN AND SOYBEAN) PROGRESS AND CONDITION USING LAND SURFACE PHENOLOGY DERIVED FROM REMOTELY SENSED BIG DATA IN THE WESTERN CORN BELT. CROP PROGRESS AND CONDITION ARE THE MOST DYNAMIC ATTRIBUTES AND ARE EARLY INDICATORS OF CROP YIELD. THIS INFORMATION IS CRITICAL TO CROP MANAGEMENT DECISIONS MADE BY FARMERS, AND TO SUPPORT DECISION MAKING BY GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, FINANCE AND INSURANCE COMPANIES, AND AGRICULTURAL PROCESSORS.THE CROP PROGRESS AND CONDITION INFORMATION IS CURRENTLY COLLECTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY THE USDA NASS BASED ON FIELD SURVEYS. ALTHOUGH SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED TO BE POWERFUL IN MONITORING CROP GROWTH, CURRENT SYSTEMS MAINLY PROCESS HISTORICAL COARSE SPATIAL RESOLUTION SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS THAT ARE SUBJECT TO INTERFERENCE BY CLOUDS. THIS PREVENTS TIMELY AND ACCURATE MONITORING OF CROP PROGRESS AT A SUFFICIENT LEVEL OF RESOLUTION.THE NEW GENERATION OPERATIONAL SATELLITES PROVIDE A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR TIMELY MONITORING OF CROP DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRESS. THESE NEW SATELLITE SYSTEMS INCLUDE HIGH SPATIAL RESOLUTION (~30M) POLAR ORBITING SATELLITES (LANDSAT-8 AND SENTINEL-2) AND HIGH TEMPORAL RESOLUTION (EVERY 5 MINUTES) GEOSTATIONARY OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL SATELLITE R-SERIES (GOES-R). THIS PROJECT WILL DEVELOP A NEW AND UNIQUE GEOSPATIAL TOOL FOR NEAR REAL TIME MONITORING OF WEEKLY CROP PROGRESS AND CONDITION AT A 30M FIELD SCALE BASED ON LAND SURFACE PHENOLOGY DERIVED FROM THE SYNTHETIC TIME SERIES FUSED FROM POLAR-ORBITING (LANDSAT-8 AND SENTINEL-2) AND GEOSTATIONARY (GOES-R) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS.THIS PROPOSED TOOL IS EXPECTED TO SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE THE TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL CAPABILITY OF MONITORING CROP GROWTH. THIS TOOL WILL BE DELIVERED TO USDA NASS TO INTEGRATE INTO ITS EXISTING OPERATIONAL SYSTEM (VEGSCAPE). THIS WILL ENHANCE THE CAPABILITY OF NASS TO PROVIDE ACCURATE AND TIMELY MONITORING OF CROP PROGRESS, GROWTH CONDITION, AND YIELD.
