LABOR-INTENSIVE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION IN THE U.S. WILL UNDERGO A SUBSTANTIAL TRANSFORMATION OVER THE NEXT DECADE THAT IS LIKELY TO EXASCERBATE DIFFICULTIES HIRING AND RETAINING FARM WORKERS. IMMIGRATION POLICY, STATE-LEVEL LABOR REGULATIONS, AND U.S. AND FOREIGN LABOR MARKET CHARACTERISTICS, WHICH JOINTLY AFFECT FARM LABOR COSTS AND FARM LABOR AVAILABILITY, INCREASINGLY PRESSURE THE LANDSCAPE OF U.S. AGRICULTURE. SECURING RELIABLE ACCESS TO FARM LABOR CONTINUES TO BE A FUNDAMENTAL CHALLENGE FOR U.S. FARMERS, AND THE OUTCOMES OF THIS SEARCH HAVE PROFOUND IMPLICATIONS FOR FARM OWNERS, LABORERS AND CONSUMERS.WE WILL COMBINE AND EXAMINE DATA FROM THE AGRICULTURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT SURVEY (ARMS), THE CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE (COA), AND THE NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL WORKERS SURVEY (NAWS) TO ESTIMATE HOW THE AGRICULTURAL LABOR MARKET RESPONDS TO WORKET SHORTAGES AND DERIVE INFERENCES ON THE EFFECT OF IMMIGRATION-POLICY REFORM ON STATE-LEVEL AGRICULTURAL LABOR MARKETS. WE WILL FILL GAPS IN THE AVAILABLE DATA ON HOW FARM LABOR SUPPLY RESPONDS TO CHANGES IN WORKER COMPENSATION BY CONDUCTING A FIELD EXPERIMENT IN COLLABORATION WITH A LARGE FRUITGROWER IN CALIFORNIA. WORKING WITH ACTUAL FIELD WORKERS IN THE MARKET WILL ALLOW US TO VARY THE COMPENSATION PACKAGE FACING WORKERS IN PREVAILING PIECE RATE CONTRACTS USED BY GROWERS TO UNDERSTAND HOW AGRICULTURAL LABOR PRODUCTIVITY RESPONDS TO DIFFERENT COMPONENTS OF THE COMPENSATION PACKAGE.
