WITH AN ESTIMATED ANNUAL LOSS OF $664 MILLION ANNUALLY, PORCINE REPRODUCTIVE AND RESPIRATORYSYNDROME VIRUS (PRRSV) IS THE MOST ECONOMICALLY SIGNIFICANT ENDEMIC SWINE PATHOGEN AFFECTINGTHE U.S. SWINE INDUSTRY TODAY. DESPITE EXTENSIVE RESEARCH EFFORTS, THERE ARE KNOWLEDGE GAPSPERTAINING TO THE MECHANISMS OF BETWEEN-FARM SPREAD OF PRRSV. THE MAJOR ROUTES OF BETWEEN-FARMTRANSMISSION OF PRRSV INCLUDE ANIMAL MOVEMENTS AND AIRBORNE/WINDBORNE TRANSMISSION OFAEROSOLS. HOWEVER, THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF EACH TRANSMISSION ROUTE, ESPECIALLY AT LOCAL LEVEL, ISUNCERTAIN AND THAT AFFECTS INFORMING MANAGEMENT DECISIONS IN PRIORITIZING BIOSECURITY MEASURES. INALIGNMENT WITH USDA'S PRIORITIES ON MAINTAINING HEALTHY AGRICULTURAL ANIMALS TO ENSURE A SAFE ANDADEQUATE FOOD SUPPLY, THIS PROJECT WILL INCREASE THE UNDERSTANDING OF BETWEEN-FARM TRANSMISSION VIAWINDBORNE MECHANISMS USING SPATIOTEMPORAL WINDBORNE MODELING APPROACHES. FURTHERMORE, THEPROJECT AIMS TO ANALYZE THE COST-EFFECTIVENESS OF MITIGATION MEASURES IN THE PREVENTION OFWINDBORNE SPREAD OF PRRV. EXPECTED OUTPUTS OF THE PROJECT ARE RISK ESTIMATES AND RISK MAPS OFWINDBORNE TRANSMISSION AND COST ESTIMATES OF BIOSECURITY MEASURES RELATED TO WINDBORNETRANSMISSION OF PRRSV. THE GENERATED KNOWLEDGE WILL IMPROVE THE DESIGN OF SURVEILLANCE PROTOCOLSBY INTEGRATING THE QUANTIFIED VARIATION OF RISK AND INCREASE CONFIDENCE IN THE RISK-BASED DECISIONMAKING PROCESS OF RESOURCES ALLOCATION WHEN IMPLEMENTING BIOSECURITY. ULTIMATELY, THIS PROPOSALWILL RESOLVE A MAJOR GAP IN THE U.S. SWINE INDUSTRY'S ABILITY TO EVALUATE AND PREDICT WINDBORNESPREAD OF PRRSV AND POTENTIALLY OTHER PATHOGENS OF SWINE. THIS PROJECT MAY SERVE AS A PROTOTYPEAND THE PLATFORM MAY BE EASILY SCALED UP TO INCLUDE OTHER RESPIRATORY PATHOGENS.
