MANURE CONTAINS SULFUR THAT CAN BE RELEASED AS HYDROGEN SULFIDE, A DANGEROUS GAS THAT CAN BE DEADLY AT LOW CONCENTRATIONS. RECENT DEATHS ASSOCIATED WITH HYDROGEN SULFIDE EXPOSURE FROM MANURE SYSTEMS HAVE HIGHLIGHTED THE NEED FOR INCREASED AWARENESS TO REDUCE HEALTH RISKS. WHILE INFORMATION ON SOME ASPECTS OF HYDROGEN SULFIDE RELEASE FROM MANURE ARE AVAILABLE, THERE IS LIMITED INFORMATION ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PLUME WHEN AGITATING MANURE STORAGES AND LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE MANURE SYSTEM WHICH RESULT IN CONCENTRATIONS THAT ARE DANGEROUS TO HUMAN HEALTH. IN ADDITION, THERE IS NEED FOR INFORMATION TO GUIDE MANAGEMENT THAT RESULTS IN CONDITIONS THAT CAN REDUCE THIS RISK. THIS RESEARCH INTENDS TO ENHANCE AN EXISTING BASE OF EXTENSION MATERIAL WITH FOCUSED RESEARCH TO ANSWER REMAINING CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON HOW TO MANAGE MANURE SYSTEMS TO LIMIT RISK FROM MANURE PROCESSING AND STORAGE AREAS. THE WORK WILL INCLUDE MEASUREMENTS OF HYDROGEN SULFIDE RELEASE IN LOCATIONS WITH MEASURED CONCENTRATIONS THAT ARE KNOWN TO BE HARMFUL TO HUMANS INCLUDING MANURE STORAGES DURING AGITATION, LAND APPLICATION SYSTEMS, AND MANURE PROCESSING FACILITIES. THIS COUPLED WITH INFORMATION ON WEATHER CONDITIONS, MANURE CHARACTERISTICS, AND OPERATIONAL INTERVENTIONS WILL ALLOW RESEARCHERS TO PROVIDE CRITICAL DATA TO THOSE WORKING WITH MANURE SYSTEMS ON HOW TO REDUCE RISKS. THIS INFORMATION WILL BE ADDED TO EXTENSION MATERIALS TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF THE DANGERS AND GUIDE PRACTICE CHANGES TO REDUCE HEALTH IMPACTS TO THOSE WORKING WITH MANURE.
