THIS PROJECT WILL LEAD TO IMPROVED FOOD SAFETY PRACTICES AMONG PRODUCE GROWERS THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A RISK-BASED, DECISION SUPPORT TOOL (DST). THE MOTIVATION FOR THE WORK COMES FROM THE PROJECT TEAM'S EXPERIENCES WORKING WITH GROWERS AS THEY NAVIGATE THE SHIFTING LANDSCAPE OF PRODUCE SAFETY STEMMING FROM THE FOOD SAFETY MODERNIZATION ACT (FSMA) AND THE ASSOCIATED PRODUCE SAFETY RULE (PSR). MANY STAKEHOLDERS FEEL OVERWHELMED BY THE NEW PRACTICES THEY PERCEIVE AS REQUIREMENTS, AND MORE SO BY THE LACK OF CLARITY ON WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR COMPLIANCE AND WHICH ONES SHOULD BE PRIORITIZED. THE TOOL WE WILL DEVELOP THROUGH THIS PROJECT WILL SUPPORT FARMERS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND FOOD SAFETY RISKS, THEREBY INFORMING STRATEGIC, ON-FARM PRODUCE SAFETY DECISIONS.
