WASHINGTON AND OREGON ARE THE TOP TWO PRODUCERS OF PEARS IN THE UNITED STATES, ACCOUNTING FOR 75% OF BEARING ACREAGE. PEAR PSYLLA IS THE MOST DAMAGING INSECT PEST OF PEARS IN THESE STATES. PSYLLA HONEYDEW MARKS FRUIT LEADING TO MILLIONS OF CULLS EACH YEAR. CONVENTIONAL GROWERS WILL SPRAY AN AVERAGE OF 15 INSECTICIDES PER SEASON TO CONTROL THIS PEST ALONE, COSTING AROUND $1,000/ACRE ON AVERAGE. HOWEVER, PEAR PSYLLA IS AN INDUCED PEST, AND OUTBREAKS ARE PERPETUATED BY THESE INSECTICIDE SPRAYS DUE TO NATURAL ENEMY DISRUPTION. ADOPTION OF PEAR IPM WILL HELP GROWERS PRODUCE FRUIT WITH LOWER INSECT INJURY AND PESTICIDE RESIDUES AT A REDUCED MONETARY AND ENVIRONMENTAL COST, THUS IMPROVING THE SECURITY OF THIS INDUSTRY.TRANSITIONING MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS FROM CONVENTIONAL TO IPM OR ORGANIC IS CHALLENGING DUE TO SLOW THE RECOLONIZATION OF NATURAL ENEMIES. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP STRATEGIES THAT IMPROVE THIS TRANSITION. THROUGH FIELD AND LAB STUDIES WE WILL OPTIMIZE NON-CHEMICAL PSYLLA MANAGEMENT TOOLS: 1) REFLECTIVE GROUND COVERS, 2) PARTICLE FILMS SPRAYS AND 3) OVERHEAD TREE WASHING. WE WILL PARTNER WITH COMMERCIAL GROWERS TO VALIDATE A BIOCONTROL-BASED 'SCORE CARD' USING NATURAL ENEMY DENSITIES FOR SPRAY DECISION MAKING. COMMON INSECTICIDES WILL BE TESTED FOR NON-TARGET EFFECTS ON THE TOP THREE PREDATORS OF PEAR PSYLLA. WE WILL DEVELOP GUIDES THAT DEMONSTRATE PEAR IPM STRATEGIES, IDENTIFY PESTS AND NATURAL ENEMIES, AND PRESENT PHENOLOGY AND PESTICIDE EFFECTS INFORMATION.
