ACTIVATION OF IMMUNE RESPONSE IN THE MOTHER TO INFECTION DURING PREGNANCY CAN IMPACT THE PHYSIOLOGY AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS OF THE OFFSPRING. IN THE PIG, THE LONG TERM CONSEQUENCES OF MATERNAL IMMUNE ACTIVATION ON THE OFFSPRING'S HEALTH AND GROWTH AFTER BIRTH ARE POORLY UNDERSTOOD BECAUSE OF THE TARGETED APPROACHES TYPICALLY USED. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO STUDY THE OFFSPRING'S MOLECULAR, IMMUNE, HORMONE, AND METABOLIC RESPONSES DUE TO THE SIMULTANEOUS IMPACT OF MATERNAL IMMUNE ACTIVATION AND STRESSORS AFTER BIRTH. THE MAIN EXPECTED RESULT IS THE ENHANCED UNDERSTANDING OF THE LONG-TERM IMPACT OF MATERNAL IMMUNE ACTIVATION ON THE OFFSPRING'S GROWTH, HEALTH, AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS. ANOTHER MAIN RESULT IS THE IDENTIFICATION OF MOLECULES AND PHYSIOLOGICAL BIOMARKERS THAT ARE DISRUPTED IN RESPONSE TO MATERNAL IMMUNE ACTIVATION. THIS IDENTIFICATION OF PROMISING BIOMARKERS IS CRITICAL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROGNOSTIC AND DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS OR THERAPIES TO AMELIORATE OR TREAT THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF MATERNAL IMMUNE ACTIVATION.
