DAIRY GOAT PRODUCTION IN NORTH AMERICA HAS GROWN SUBSTANTIALLY IN THE LAST DECADE. INCREASED DEMAND FOR GOAT MILK PRODUCTS HAS DRIVEN THE PROLIFERATION OF DAIRY GOAT OPERATIONS AND AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF PRODUCERS THAT HAVE MINIMAL EXPERIENCE WITH DAIRY GOATS. HOWEVER, THERE ARE EXTREMELY LIMITED RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO DAIRY GOAT PRODUCERS RELATED TO WELLBEING OF THEIR LIVESTOCK. THE GOAL OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO CLOSE THIS GAP WITH CRITICALLY NEEDED INFORMATION AND EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS. IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL WE WILL PURSUE THREE OBJECTIVES:OBJECTIVE 1: ASSESS CURRENT DAIRY GOAT INDUSTRY WELLBEING USING A FARM LEVEL ASSESSMENT AND PROVIDING THE RESULTS BACK TO THE INDUSTRY AS A MEANS OF IDENTIFYING SPECIFIC ISSUES REQUIRING ADDITIONAL EFFORT, WHILE ALSO ALLOWING FOR BENCHMARKING INDIVIDUAL FARM PERFORMANCE.OBJECTIVE 2: DEVELOP NEW MANAGEMENT APPROACHES FOR KEY DAIRY GOAT WELLBEING ISSUES AND COMPARE THEM TO THE CURRENT INDUSTRY APPROACHES IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY THE BEST STANDARDS OF PRACTICE.OBJECTIVE 3: DEVELOP AND DISSEMINATE DAIRY GOAT WELLBEING EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING MATERIALS RELEVANT TO THE NA DAIRY GOAT PRODUCTION SYSTEMS.AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE STUDY THE ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES INCLUDE A) DEVELOPMENT OF WELLBEING EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, B) DEVELOPMENT OF A WEBSITE FOR PRODUCERS FOCUSED ON DAIRY GOAT WELLBEING AND C) PROVIDING A WEB INTERFACE TO ALLOW PRODUCERS TO CONDUCT A FARM-LEVEL SELF-ASSESSMENT OF WELLBEING AND BENCHMARK THEIR FARM AGAINST THAT OF PEERS.
