THE PROJECT AIMS TO MODEL THE PHYSICAL AND BIOGEOCHEMICAL PROCESSES AFFECTING THE FLUXES, FATE AND TRANSPORT OF N NUTRIENT IN THE FORM OF AMMONIA (NH3) EMISSIONS FROM POULTRY EGG PRODUCTION TO SUPPORT PRIORITY AREA A1401- SUSTAINABLE AGROECOSYSTEMS: FUNCTIONS, PROCESSES AND MANAGEMENT, NUTRIENT CYCLES AND MANAGEMENT.NITROGEN LOSS VIA AMMONIA (NH3) EMISSIONS FROM ANIMAL FARMS CONTRIBUTES 80% OF THE TOTAL ANTHROPOGENIC NH3 EMISSIONS TO THE ATMOSPHERE IN THE U.S. AND CAUSES SIGNIFICANT AGROECOSYSTEM CONCERNS. BOTH THE ANIMAL PRODUCTION INDUSTRIES AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES NEED RELIABLE TOOLS TO ASSESS NH3 FLUXES, FATE AND TRANSPORT FOR FAIR REGULATIONS AND EFFECTIVE MITIGATION OF ITS ADVERSE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS. UNFORTUNATELY, IT HAS NOT BEEN FEASIBLE TO ESTABLISH THE MUCH-NEEDED TOOLS DUE TO THE LACK OF SCIENTIFIC WORK ON EXISTING DATA. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP THESE MODEL TOOLS USING HIGH QUALITY NH3 EMISSION DATA GENERATED THROUGH THE PREVIOUS AFRI PROJECTS AND THE NATIONAL AIR EMISSION MONITORING STUDY (NAEMS). THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES ARE TO DEVELOP (1) META-ANALYSIS AND A DATABASE OF NH3 EMISSIONS FROM POULTRY PRODUCTION, (2) A MECHANISTIC AMMONIA EMISSION MODEL (AEM) FOR NH3 EMISSIONS FROM POULTRY LAYER MANURE, (3) FARM-SCALE, PROCESSED-BASED AEMS FOR NH3 EMISSIONS FROM MANURE-BELT LAYER HOUSES AND MANURE MANAGE PROCESSES, AND (4) AERMOD AND PALM DISPERSION MODELS FOR FATE AND TRANSPORT OF NH3 EMISSIONS FROM POULTRY PRODUCTION. THE EXPECTED OUTCOMES INCLUDE A DATABASE, A FUNDAMENTAL MECHANISTIC AEM, PROCESSED-BASED AEMS, AND DISPERSION MODELS OF PALM AND AERMOD FOR NH3 EMISSIONS FROM POULTRY FACILITIES AND SUBSEQUENT TRANSPORT AND DEPOSITION. THE OUTCOMES ARE EXPECTED TO PROVIDE DECISION SUPPORT TOOLS FOR THE ANIMAL INDUSTRIES AND GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES TO FAIRLY ASSESS AND EFFECTIVELY CONTROL NH3 EMISSIONS FOR IMPROVED HEALTH, EGG PRODUCTION, AND SUSTAINABLE AGROECOSYSTEMS. OUR EXPERIENCED MULTI-DISCIPLINARY AND MULTI-STATE TEAM IS UNIQUELY POSITIONED TO ENSURE THE SUCCESS OF THIS PROJECT.
