AGRICULTURE LITERACY THROUGH IMMERSIVE LEARNING OUTDOORS EXPERIENCE IS A TWO YEAR EDUCATIONAL PROJECT GEARED TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF SECONDARY TEACHERS (8TH TO 12TH GRADE) TRAINED IN FOOD, AGRICULTURE, NATURAL RESOURCES AND HUMANS (FANH) SCIENCE IN PUERTO RICO. THIS PROJECT WILL DEVELOP CONTINUING EDUCATION WORKSHOPS AND COACHING SUPPORT FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND IMMERSIVE OUTDOORS EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROGRAM, CREATING AN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY MODEL, A BEST PRACTICES, DERIVED FROM THE SCIENCE TEACHER TRAINING MODEL OF THE SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS (SEA) OF THE UNIVERSIDAD METROPOLITANA. THIS PROGRAM WILL IMPACT TWENTY (20) UNIQUE ACTIVE TEACHERS FOR ALL DISCIPLINES FROM SECONDARY SCHOOLS (8TH TO 12TH GRADES) OF THE HUMACAO EDUCATIONAL REGION (HER), SPECIFICALLY SCHOOLS FROM THE PROMISE ZONE (FAJARDO, NAGUABO AND CEIBA) TO SUPPORT THE USDA OBJECTIVES TO STRENGTHEN RURAL OPPORTUNITY IN HIGH-POVERTY URBAN, RURAL AND TRIBAL COMMUNITIES, IN THE EASTERN REGIONOF PUERTO RICO.THE PROGRAM WILL CONSIST IN PROVIDING 192 HOURS OF CONTINUING EDUCATION (19 CREDIT UNITS) THROUGH SIX (6) WORKSHOPS THAT INTEGRATE NINE (9) IMMERSIVE OUTDOORS EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND COACHING SUPPORT DURING ONE SEMESTER OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR, TO PARTICIPANT TEACHERS. DURING THE WORKSHOPS, TEACHERS WILL PARTICIPATE IN INTERACTIVE TRAINING, RESEARCH AND ACTIVITIES IN FANH SCIENCES USING PLACE BASED LEARNING APPROACH. COACHING SUPPORT WILL CONSIST IN REGULAR MEETINGS BETWEEN PARTICIPANT TEACHERS, PROFESSIONAL LECTURES IN FANH SCIENCE AND SEA'S PROFESSORS THAT ARE PART OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY, TO DISCUSS HOW PARTICIPANTS INTEGRATE THE FANH SCIENCE ACTIVITIES AND LEARNING STRATEGIES IN THEIR CLASSROOM AND HOW THE ACTIVITIES ENHANCED STUDENTS' OUTCOMES.
