THE PROPOSED PROJECT SEEKS TO IDENTIFY MANURE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES THAT ARE EFFECTIVE IN CONTROLING ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE (ABR) ON BEEF FEEDLOT OPERATIONS DURING MANURE COLLECTION, STORAGE, AND APPLICATION. RESEARCH FINDINGS WILL BE TRANSLATED INTO RECOMMENDATIONS OF PRACTICES FOR STAKEHOLDERS TO CONTROL ABR IN FOOD PRODUCTION SYSTEMS AND BE INCORPORATED INTO TRAINING MATERIALS TO PREPARE STUDENTS TO ADDRESS THE ABR CHALLENGE. ALL OF THE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES TO BE TESTED IN THIS PROJECT ARE ALREADY USED IN THE FIELD FOR OTHER PURPOSES SUCH AS PATHOGEN CONTROL AND SOIL CONSERVATION, WHICH COULD ENABLE EASY ADOPTION OF THESE PRACTICES BY STOCKHOLDERS TO MITIGATE ABR IN LIVESTOCK MANURE AND HENCE MAKE REAL IMPACTS ON PROTECTING FOOD SAFETY AGAINST ABR. THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES WILL BE ACHIEVED IN THE PROJET: (1) INHIBIT THE ACCUMULATION OF ANTIBIOTICS AND ABR PATHOGENS AND GENES IN BEEF FEEDLOT PEN FLOOR MATERIALS USING LIME TREATMENT; (2) ENHANCE THE REDUCTION OF ANTIBIOTICS AND ABR PATHOGENS AND GENES IN STOCKPILES DURING MANURE STORAGE BY SOLARIZATION; (3) PROMOTE NATURAL ATTENUATION OF ANTIBIOTICS AND ABR PATHOGENS AND GENES IN SOIL FOLLOWING MANURE LAND APPLICATION USING CONSERVATION TILLAGE; (4) DEVELOP A METAGENOMICS-ENABLED QUANTITATIVE MICROBIAL RISK ASSESSMENT MODEL FOR SYSTEM-LEVEL ASSESSMENT OF THE PREVALENCE AND CONCENTRATION OF ABR PATHOGENS AND GENES IN MANURE MANAGEMENT; (5) ENHANCE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PRACTICES THAT CAN MITIGATE THE ACCUMULATION OF ANTIBIOTICS AND ABR PATHOGENS AND GENES IN BEEF FEEDLOT MANURE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS; AND (6) ENGAGE UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS IN STUDYING ABR AT THE INTERFACE OF MANURE MANAGEMENT AND FOOD SAFETY.
