WE PROPOSE TO PERFORM A SURVEY OF 73 COMETS THAT SERENDIPITOUSLY APPEAR IN THE FIRST 18 SECTORS OF THE TRANSIENT EXOPLANET SURVEY SATELLITE (TESS) USING THE FULL-FRAME IMAGES TO CHARACTERIZE THE COMETS TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL PHENOMENA. TESS INSTRUMENTAL STABILITY AND 30-MINUTE SAMPLING CADENCE THAT CONTINUES THROUGHOUT THE 27.4-DAY SECTOR POINTING PRODUCES A DATASET OF UNPRECEDENTED QUALITY FOR THIS STUDY. AMONG OUR GOALS WILL BE TO MONITOR THE COMETS SHORT- AND LONG-TERM TEMPORAL BEHAVIOR INCLUDING TRACKING SECULAR CHANGES IN ACTIVITY MEASURING THE NUCLEUS SPIN STATE AND ANY CHANGES IN THAT STATE OVER TIME RECORDING AND ANALYZING VARIABILITY IN THE COMA MORPHOLOGY AND SEARCHING FOR SPONTANEOUS OUTBURSTS. BY ALIGNING AND CO-ADDING NUMEROUS IMAGES WE WILL INVESTIGATE FAINT SPATIAL FEATURES IN THE COMA AND SEARCH FOR DUST TRAILS THAT WILL CONSTRAIN THE COMETS' TOTAL MASS LOSS RATES. FOR SPECIFIC HIGH-PROFILE COMETS INCLUDING POTENTIAL SPACECRAFT TARGETS WE WILL PERFORM MORE DETAILED ANALYSES TO BETTER CHARACTERIZE THE ACTIVITY FOR PLANNING ANY FUTURE MISSIONS. BECAUSE OUR COMET SAMPLE INCLUDES A WIDE VARIETY OF FAMILY TYPES WE WILL ALSO PERFORM COMPARATIVE COMET STUDIES TO INVESTIGATE ANY CORRELATIONS BETWEEN THE PHENOMENA THAT ARE (OR ARE NOT) OBSERVED TO IMPROVE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE EVOLUTIONARY PROCESSES ACTING ON COMETS. WITH A 73-COMET SAMPLE AND THE MASSIVE HIGH-QUALITY DATASET PRODUCED BY TESS OUR SYSTEMATIC APPROACH WILL PRODUCE A MORE DETAILED AND COMPLETE SURVEY OF TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL CHARACTERISTICS THAN HAS EVER BEFORE BEEN POSSIBLE. GIVEN THE VOLUME OF DATA AND NUMBER OF COMETS IN THE SURVEY AUTOMATION IS CRITICAL FOR AN EFFICIENT STUDY. WE WILL USE TESS USER PROVIDED SOFTWARE AND/OR DEVELOP OUR OWN ROUTINES FOR REMOVAL OF SCATTERED LIGHT AND BACKGROUND STARS AND FOR PRODUCING DATA PRODUCTS THAT SIMPLIFY THE ANALYSES OF THE MASSIVE DATASETS. WITH THESE DERIVED DATA PRODUCTS WE WILL USE OUR EXISTING SOFTWARE TO INVESTIGATE ROTATION STATES OF THE NUCLEI AND TO MODEL DUST TRAILS. WE PROPOSE TO USE A LONG-DURATION HIGH-CADENCE SURVEY OF THE TEMPORAL AND PHYSICAL BEHAVIOR OF A LARGE NUMBER OF COMETS. COMPARING AND CONTRASTING THE BEHAVIOR OF THESE OBJECTS PROVIDES A UNIFORM DATABASE THAT CAN BE USED TO INVESTIGATE THE PROGRESSION AND EVOLUTION OF THE COMETS' ACTIVITY. ALL ASPECTS OF THIS STUDY ARE RELEVANT TO THE STATED GOALS OF THE SSW PROGRAM. OUR STUDY IS NOT RELEVANT TO OTHER NASA PROGRAMS AS WE WILL OBTAIN NO NEW DATA AND SOLAR SYSTEM STUDIES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE ASTROPHYSICAL DATA ANALYSIS PROGRAM (ADAP) THAT TYPICALLY FUNDS TESS RESEARCH.
