THE DESIRE TO GENERATE TRANSFORMATIVE DATA ON THE PYROLYSIS OF PHENOLIC IMPREGNATED CARBON ABLATOR (PICA) LED TO THE FUNDED ESI-14 PROJECT (NNX15AD77G) INVOLVING IN SITU REAL-TIME MEASUREMENTS OF THE PYROLYSIS PRODUCTS OF PICA. SPECIFICALLY THE TIME DEPENDENCIES (I.E. RATES) OF APPEARANCE OF ALL PRODUCTS AND THEIR ABSOLUTE YIELDS AS THEY EMERGE FROM A DECOMPOSING PICA SURFACE WERE MEASURED AS A FUNCTION OF TIME PYROLYSIS TEMPERATURE AND HEATING RATE WITH THE USE OF A CALIBRATED RGA MASS SPECTROMETER.
