ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATIONS IN THE FAR ULTRAVIOLET (FUV) SPECTRAL REGION ARE SOME OF THE MORE CHALLENGING DUE TO THE VERY DISTANT AND FAINT OBJECTS THAT ARE TYPICALLY SEARCHED FOR IN COSMIC ORIGIN STUDIES SUCH AS THE ORIGIN OF LARGE SCALE STRUCTURES THE FORMATION EVOLUTION AND AGE OF GALAXIES AND THE ORIGIN OF STELLAR AND PLANETARY SYSTEMS. THE LOW REFLECTIVITY OF COATINGS IN THE LYMAN ULTRAVIOLET (LUV) RANGE OF 90-130 NM IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST CONSTRAINTS ON FUV TELESCOPE AND SPECTROGRAPH DESIGN AND IT LIMITS THE SCIENCE RETURN OF FUV-SENSITIVE SPACE MISSIONS. IN FACT TO ACHIEVE HIGH-REFLECTANCE IN BROADBAND COATINGS HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS AN ESSENTIAL GOAL IN THE TECHNOLOGY NEEDS FOR THE LARGE UV/OPTICAL/IR (LUVOIR) SURVEYOR OBSERVATORY [1]. MOREOVER ACCORDING TO THE ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITIES FOR RESEARCH IN ASTRONOMY REPORT FROM COSMIC BIRTH TO LIVING EARTHS THE FUTURE OF UVOIR SPACE ASTRONOMY" OBTAINING BROADBAND COATINGS WITH A PERFORMANCE OF>50 70% REFLECTANCE BELOW 120 NM IS AN IMMEDIATE HIGHPRIORITY TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENT AREA FUNDAMENTAL TO MISSION FEASIBILITY THAT NEEDS FURTHER DEVELOPMENT. IMPROVED REFLECTIVE COATINGS FOR OPTICS PARTICULARLY IN THE LUV SPECTRUM COULD YIELD DRAMATICALLY MORE SENSITIVE INSTRUMENTS AND PERMIT MORE INSTRUMENT DESIGN FREEDOM. FURTHERMORE INVESTIGATIONS IN IMPROVING REFLECTANCE PERFORMANCE OF COATINGS IN THIS REGION HAS THE POTENTIAL TO OFFER UNPRECEDENTED RETURN ON INVESTMENT GIVEN THAT THE LUV CONTAINS THE HIGHEST DENSITY OF LINE OBSERVATIONS IN THE UVVIS-IR SPECTRUM. MANY RESONANT LINES OF IMPORTANT ATOMS AND IONS SUCH AS O VI AND THE ELECTRONIC TRANSITION SYSTEMS OF H2 HD AND CO ARE FOUND IN THE LUV REGION.
