THERE ARE MANY MERITS OF USING SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING FOR COASTAL WETLAND SCIENCE AND RESTORATION. COASTAL FRESHWATER WETLANDS ARE VITALLY IMPORTANT ECOSYSTEMS THAT PERFORM NUMEROUS ECOSYSTEM SERVICES HOWEVER THEY ARE UNDER THREAT FROM SALTWATER INTRUSION. THERE IS A NEED FOR FURTHER UNDERSTANDING OF THE IMPACTS OF SALTWATER INTRUSION ON THESE VULNERABLE ECOSYSTEMS FROM THE ORGANISMAL TO THE REGIONAL SCALE. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH AIMS TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPACTS OF SALTWATER INTRUSION ON THE BIOGEOCHEMICAL PROCESSES OF COASTAL WETLANDS ACROSS SCALES THROUGH A RANGE OF APPROACHES INCLUDING CHEMICAL ANALYSIS BIOPHYSICAL ASSESSMENTS AND REMOTE SENSING. I WILL CONDUCT A FIELD EXPERIMENT INVOLVING SALT ADDITIONS TO A TREE DOMINATED FRESHWATER COASTAL WETLAND AND USE FIELD BASED MEASUREMENTS TO MONITOR CHANGES IN THE SOIL CHEMISTRY AND VEGETATIVE COMMUNITIES OVER TIME. I WILL COUPLE THIS APPROACH WITH THE USE OF REMOTE SENSING TO STUDY THE EFFECTS OF SALT ADDITIONS ON THE TREE CANOPY. THERMAL AND VISIBLE IMAGERY FROM BOTH DRONES AND SATELLITES WILL BE USED TO ASSESS THE IMPACT OF SALTWATER INTRUSION ON COASTAL WETLAND VEGETATION. HIGH RESOLUTION DRONE IMAGERY OF THE FIELD EXPERIMENT WILL BE USED AS AN INTERMEDIARY STEP FOR MODELING REGIONAL SCALE CHANGE THROUGH SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING. THIS RESEARCH WILL HELP TO ADVANCE THE DISCIPLINE BY REFINING EXISTING TOOLS FOR UNDERSTANDING ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSORS IN COASTAL SYSTEMS WHICH ARE EXTREMELY VULNERABLE TO CHANGE.
