THE POTHOLE WETLANDS OF THE PRAIRIE POTHOLE REGION OF THE AMERICAN MIDCONTINENT PLAY A KEY ROLE IN THE AGRICULTURE ECOLOGY AND HYDROLOGY OF THE GREAT PLAINS. WE PROPOSE A COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY OF TIME-VARYING POTHOLE WATER STORAGE FROM 1984 TO THE PRESENT BY COMBINING EXISTING PUBLIC LIDAR ELEVATION DATA WITH LANDSAT-DERIVED SURFACE WATER EXTENT PRODUCTS. THE DYNAMIC WETLAND INVENTORY WILL THEN BE USED FOR TESTING NEW STATISTICAL HYDROLOGY MODELS FOR PREDICTING WETLAND STORAGE AS A FUNCTION OF PRECIPITATION AND LAND USE AMONG OTHER FACTORS. WE WILL THEN FORECAST FUTURE BEHAVIOR OF THESE WETLANDS BY DRIVING SIMULATIONS OF WETLAND DYNAMICS WITH GLOBAL CLIMATE MODEL FORECASTS OVER THE NEXT CENTURY. THESE FINDINGS WILL HELP GUIDE DECISION-MAKERS IN GOVERNMENT AND POLICY IDENTIFY ILLEGAL WETLAND DESTRUCTION AND ASSESS THE VALUE OF WETLANDS FOR FLOOD MITIGATION AND OTHER ECOSYSTEM SERVICES.
