TERMITES AND TERMITE MOUNDS ARE CHARACTERISTIC OF TROPICAL AND SUB-TROPICAL SAVANNAS GRASSLANDS AND DESERT MARGINS PARTICULARLY IN AFRICA. WHILE TERMITES MAY BE LESS CHARISMATIC THAN THE WILDLIFE AND DOMESTIC ANIMALS THAT LIVE IN THE SAVANNAS THE VISUALLY DISTINCTIVE TERMITE SPIRES AND DOMES THAT DOT THESE LANDSCAPES ARE TESTAMENT TO THE PIVOTAL ROLE THEY PLAY IN DECOMPOSITION OF PLANT MATERIAL AND NUTRIENT CYCLING. THE PRESENCE OF TERMITE MOUNDS ALSO IMPACTS A HOST OF OTHER ECOSYSTEM PROCESSES INCLUDING HYDROLOGICAL DYNAMICS (WATER REDISTRIBUTION) VEGETATION DIVERSITY AND SPATIAL DISTRIBUTIONS AND HERBIVORE FORAGING BEHAVIOR. THIS RESEARCH RESPONDS TO THE NASA CARBON CYCLE AND ECOSYSTEMS SCIENCE FOCUS AREA BY DEVELOPING METHODS TO DETECT TERMITE MOUNDS ACROSS BROAD GEOGRAPHIC SCALES USING SENTINEL 2 MONITOR MOUND EFFECTS USING LANDSAT-8 AND UNDERSTAND MOUND DEMOGRAPHIC PROCESSES USING ARCHIVAL HIGH RESOLUTION IMAGERY. THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF TERMITE MOUNDS WILL BE DOCUMENTED AND HYPOTHESES CONCERNING THE IMPACT OF TERMITE MOUNDS ON VEGETATION PRODUCTIVITY AND LANDSCAPE DROUGHT RESPONSE ACROSS SENEGAL WILL BE ADDRESSED.
